No fewer than 5,540 applicants have applied for the 100 vacancies approved by the Nasarawa State Government at Isa Mustapha Agwai Polythecnic, Lafia.

The Rector of the Polythecnic, Dr. Justina Kotso, made the disclosure on Tuesday in Lafia when the management of the institution appeared before the State House Assembly Committee on Education for its 2021 budget assessment.

She explained that the polythecnic was able to screen the 5,540 applicants and 767 of them were qualified for the job, out of whom were 400 first class graduates.

Kotso also disclosed that the institution under her watch had achieved a lot especially in the area of infrastructural development, Information and Communication Technology and improved security on the school premises.

“But as Oliver Twist, we are appealing for more funding because that is one of the challenges we are facing. We are prepared to continue to bring new innovations for the overall development of the institution” she added.
The Chairman, House Committee on Education, Daniel Ogazi, urged the rector and management of the polytechnic to absorb academic and non-academic casual staff who had been working in the institution for a long period of time before considering other fresh applicants in its ongoing recruitment.

“Some of them have been working as casual staff for many years and now that the government has approved employment, I urge you to absorb them before you consider fresh applicants,” he added.

Maybe, but consider this

She explained that the polythecnic was able to screen the 5,540 applicants and 767 of them were qualified for the job, out of whom were 400 first class graduates.

There are 5540 applicants for 100 jobs. Out of which, 767 are actually qualified for the jobs...meaning that's 767 applicants for 100 jobs. That means for every one space, at least 7-8 qualified applicants are fighting for it. And Nass Poly can only take one ....one of every 7..

Apart from the fact that they are a state poly and would be very likely biased towards their indigenes, and even then, not all of them would make it.

Let's be honest....whichever way you look at it...6-7 people are not going to make it per 1 space. ...that's something like 647 people who won't make it. It has nothing to do with corruption. Or with spaces already shared by the big political forces.....it is the way it is. Too many people competing for too few jobs.

At the end of the day, it would be easy for one of the failed applicants to say s/he did not get the job because he did not have the 'connections' or because 'he was not an indigene'. But the simple fact is that s/he did not get the job because there were too many applicants for too few spaces.

That is why Nigeria needs to be like China or Japan...an industrial nation...so that we can have too many jobs outnumbering the graduates. But we want to all live off the revenue we get from raw materials which is never sufficient for our needs.

Modified

Let's even assume Nass Poly decided to consider only 'FIRST CLASS GRADUATES'....that means 400 people competiting for 100 jobs...or 4 people competing for one job...all first class graduates.

All the best to them and young people that still hustle / justle for OFFLINE/REGULAR JOBS.....ONLINE / REMOTE JOBS are always bae ; you'll earn money with conformability and just a lil stress from your home/workstation.

How i wish they knew the so many ease2access legitimate earning ways available on the online space! SMH.
Even if they are not seasoned in the various professions they studied they could form a group and earn on platforms like YouTube & Anchor just by creating loveable contents related to their Line of profession or course studied!

In another news if you have access to Internet + browsing gadgets and you ain't earning via your online activities in this times of economic crisis in Nigeria then you are very unwise.

You may be true but I also don't support giving them jobs just because of first class. There are so many first-class graduates who lack basic skills for jobs

The unemployment situation in Nigeria has gone beyond redemption. We don't have a clue to save the predicament our youths and underemployed citizens are facing.

Nigeria needs help.

5,140 is a huge number capable of changing the lives of all the 5140 people without looking for Poly jobs one at a time. The problem is the mindset, that’s where the chain is!

If you have access to this much people either as one of them or have their database, you and them are in money! Ask.

Maybe, but that is the way the world is.

Plus having a first class means you had the capacity to 1) be organised enough in your academic work 2) show original thinking in writing your end of year project that wowed your supervisiors.

It's not perfect. I know. A lot of brilliant students miss out on first class because they work in a way or a re creative in a way that is outside the box, but the sad thing is exams, while not perfect...are the only way we can access intelligence and capability to do the job well.

Can't u read and comprehend? Reread what I wrote. I said "so many" not all. Remember many valuable companies in the world today don't even require degrees. Elon Musk of Tesla and spacex doesn't even care if you've never been to school if you have the skills the need. Nigerian schools teach 95% theory. And why will I be envious of first class when I am out of the uni since and doing well? grin

Industrial development requirement good governance that can enact good policies. You can't build industries in a country that can only generate 4000 MW for 200 million people. Steel plants that are waiting for the Russians to return and tell them why Ajaokuta is not working.

Nigeria must restructure its economy and let the regions with potential develop their capabilities, that is what the Chinese did. They didn't industrialised China, they created FTZ on the coast of China and invited Western and Japanese firms to build factories.

I never said first-class was useless but it's just the way some people overvalue it. I know about 3 first-class graduates who are hustling on the street today. Elon Musk of Tesla and spacex doesn't even care if you've never been to school if you have the skills the need. Nigerian schools teach 95% theory. Yes, that's true...but then again, we have the issue that our power sector is severely underfundded...due to the fact that

1.Government sets prices for the DISCOS...which in practice are not cost reflective.

2.This in turn means DISCOS run at a loss, and have to reject power...from the GENCOS to cut their losses...meaning the GENCOS too run at a loss.

3.Then there is bad management and corruption.

4.Not everyone pays for the power they use. (Most of us do tho!)

As outlined in this report and summarized below.
