More about the VAT argument by Adeyinka Grandson in 2012:*

I will like to give three examples of the VAT revenue generated in Yorubaland so that we can think creatively. Every day, the Yoruba people consumed 10 million bottles of soft drinks.

On the average, a bottle of soft drink costs ₦100; of which 5%, which comes to ₦5 is paid as VAT per bottle. If we multiplied ₦5 by 10 million bottles of soft drinks, this comes to N50 million per day paid as VAT for soft drinks by the Yoruba people. The ₦50 million multiplied by 7 days in a week comes to ₦350 million. If the ₦350 million paid by the Yoruba as VAT for soft drinks in a week is set aside to fund education across Yorubaland, all our children and young people will attend primary school to university for free.

But under the unitary system of Nigeria, the entire ₦350 million paid every week by the Yoruba as VAT for soft drinks goes to Abuja to fund the economic growth and development of the North and Igboland.

Let us look at beer consumption. Yoruba citizens and residents living in Yorubaland drink 5 million bottles of beer daily. The average price of a bottle of beer is ₦300 Naira. For every ₦300 Naira spent on a bottle of beer, ₦15 Naira is paid as VAT, which is 5% of the ₦300 Naira. ₦15 Naira multiplied by 5 million bottles of beer will come to ₦75 million Naira paid daily by the people in Yorubaland as VAT on beers.

There are 365 days in a year. If we multiplied ₦75 million by 365 days, we are starting to get ₦27 billion Naira as VAT payment on beer in a year across Yorubaland. If we divide the ₦27 billion Naira by 7, being the seven Yoruba states, including Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara/Kogi, we are starting to get ₦3.9 billion for each of the seven Yoruba states.

If we pass on each of the seven Yoruba states ₦3.9 billion Naira every year to provide free and qualitative healthcare, every Yoruba citizen and resident living in Yorubaland would have access to free and qualitative healthcare. Yoruba doctors, nurses, paramedic and other hospital support staff would no longer be available for the North America and European nations.

They would instead make their services available for the benefit of their own people first and foremost. The number of Yoruba citizens going to churches and mosques for prayer over illness would reduce drastically, because they would rather access the hospital for free and qualitative healthcare.

According to the UAC Foods Limited, the company that pioneered the Sausage Roll market in 1952 and for over 50 years, has sold Gala Sausage Roll, a highly nutritious, delicious and satisfying snack made from pure beef filling and rich wheat-based pastry in Nigeria, confirmed that 30 million pieces of the Gala are sold per day across Yorubaland.

The price of one Gala is ₦25.00. The VAT on one Gala is ₦1.25K, which is 5 percent of ₦25 Naira. If we multiplied 30 million pieces of Gala sold daily by ₦1.25K, which is the 5% VAT on one Gala, we get ₦37.5 million paid daily by the Yoruba as VAT on Gala.

There is VAT chargeable on all goods and services like table water, sachet water, bread, butter, restaurant, hotel, shoes and bags, clothing etc. If ordinary Gala can bring forth ₦37.5 million per day; soft drinks, bringing ₦50 million per day and beer bringing in ₦75 million per day as VAT, where are the benefits on the Yoruba’s people who are paying these taxes?

All the money goes to Abuja to benefit the North and Igboland not the Yoruba people. Abuja used the money to fund the economic growth and development of the Hausa/Fulani and the Igbo people.

Pure madness. The Igbo is not your enemy. Never you count them along the north as those benefiting from your taxes. Before you were even born by your mother, the Igbo had expressed the desire to have nothing to do with you or any region for that matter. Please park well.
