Nigerian Lawyer, Francis Chukwu Dazzles NY Law School

Over the weekend at the New York Law School graduation ceremony, Nigerian lawyer, Mr. Francis Chukwu, delivered a spectacular speech as the voice of the Class of 2011. He was given the honor for his exemplary performance as a student and a member of the Law School community.

As a student, Mr. Chukwu started an influential discussion group on Africa that brought together a diverse segment of students and faculty members. The dean of the Law School, Prof. Richard L. Revesz, cited the forum as one that opened the political space of Africa to student who otherwise would not have had the opportunity.

In his well-received speech, Mr. Chukwu talked about his experiences in America and how he made it in spite of all odds. Mr. Chukwu’s humor-filled speech floored that of the commencement speaker, Leonel Fernandez, the president of Dominican Republic.

Mr. Francis Chukwu received an LLM in International Business Regulation, litigation and Arbitration. He was also a Vanderbilt scholar.

Francis Chukwu studied law at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus. He graduated with First Class honors in 2006. He was awarded the Bankole Olumide Aluko Memorial Scholarship at the Nigerian Law School. He graduated from the Nigerian Law School with another First Class honors and was awarded the T. O. S. Benson Prize for the Best Overall Performance.

Francis Chukwu is from Ebonyi State. He is currently on a fellowship at the IMF in Washington DC. He is interested in working with international organizations on issues in African development, human rights, and international business regulations. He also wants to teach law.
