I have followed Sule Lamido, for quite sometime and I believe that he is very interested in running for President in a short time but am impressed with what he has done

@GARTH: Watching that now. Impressive so far.

What do you mean by "highly educated citizens?" Relative to where?

When compared to other northern states.

Dude planted 8 million trees too to combat the encroaching desert.

I must say, I'm very impressed. He seems to know what his state needs. Hrm, the North would be a lot better off if he represented your typical governor rather than the best.

Sort of shameful that he is outperforming so many other governors in Nigeria given his seemingly small budget ($500 million.) I guess says a lot about how much other governors are stealing?  undecided

Anyway, a big kudos to him.
Re: Think Only Fashola & Amaechi Are Doing Wonders? Check Out Sule Lamido In Jigawa by ektbear: 4:44pm On May 25, 2011

Hon. Members would recall that capital expenditure in the 2009 Appropriation Law constituted
over 64% of the total approved estimates, a significant proportion of which was meant for the
completion or continuation of several ongoing projects.

That is how you build a state, lol. 64% on capital projects, means less than 40% on recurrent expenditure. Given that $500 million budget, that means he spent (or intended to spend) roughly $320 million on infrastruture for that year.

Now, why isn't every governor in Nigeria doing the same?

I guess too much temptation to just steal the money

Man. . . is it really this cheap to build roads in Nigeria?

Despite some initial set-backs, Hadejia – Garun Gabas road is also progressing very steadily to
be completed during the year. In addition to these, contracts for six new road projects traversing
a distance of 205 kilometers were awarded during the year at a cost of about N13 billion all of
which have been mobilized and are now ongoing.

Which by my calculations is less than $700,000 per mile. Why on earth are major roads in the SW and most of Nigeria so poor? Very annoying.
Re: Think Only Fashola & Amaechi Are Doing Wonders? Check Out Sule Lamido In Jigawa by bkbabe97y(m): 5:02pm On May 25, 2011
Seems like only the Ibos, despite their boasts, cant point to one achievement made by their leaders. Even the Hausas they regularly condemn as illiterate seem to be zooming past them!

Maybe Vehicular movements in the state is very little due to the high rate of poverty, So the roads rarely get damaged.

every year the best 100 students in WAEC are sponsored to Egypt to study medicine, just as emphasis is also given to local students.

in the east you must pay the locals before you even start any road project, you must provide security for the expatriate worker. all this add to cost. while here in the north, the land is given free by the locals for any project to be sited in their area

vehicular movement btw major towns are as busy as any average state in the south. Jos - Bauchi road, Kano - Kaduna road. Sokoto - Birnin kebbi road are always busy.

Why Egypt? Why not a medical school in Nigeria? Would be cheaper.

But in both cases, it is dumb and a waste of money, no? Take your 100 best WAEC students and send them to do medical training locally

On your pix post in page 1, [pix no. 10] there are numerous almajiris roaming the street with their plates, what is your governor doing about rehabilitating them.

That pix will discourage any investor from coming to invest in your state.

You know very well that the almajiri syndrome is one of the major reasons why investors shy away from investing in the north.

which of these roads ve you pass thru? all the trailers going east, south south and Lagos, when they get to Lokoja bridge do they fly to their destination ? i ve travel to virtually all the states in the south so noting you can tell me. for example PHC - Akwa Ibom road is pretty as densely as Jos - Bauchi or say Kano - Maiduguri. the road from Ahoda Rivers - Bayelsa one can blow 160km without thinking of stamping the brakes save for the numerous police / military checkpoints.

Jigawa gov weeps

Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, wept publicly at a special reception organised to mark his victory for a second term on Sunday, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The occasion, which was organised in Dutse, the state capital, by the Directorate of Religious, Chieftancy and Sharia Implementation, drew Islamic clerics from all over the country.

The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation and preaching by various Islamic scholars who charged Lamido to do good things for the people.

A prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Rabiu Daura, tasked Lamido to visit the prisons and see the condition of some inmates who were jailed because of minor offences which could be pardoned.

Daura cited a case where a prisoner was jailed because of a debt of N200 after he was taken to court by his creditor.

He called on the governor to grant amnesty to such people anytime he visited the prison.

The cleric reminded Lamido that leadership was just like oath-taking and that everybody knew what happened during the election.

He appealed to Lamido to embrace everybody irrespective of political differences because “you are already a leader.”

Also speaking, the state PDP Chairman, Alhaji Duniya-ba-hutu, said the ceremony was aimed at celebrating the victory of Lamido.

Nice to see someone bringing development to a relatively quiet state like Jigawa . .Reminds me of the Donald Duke magic in Cross River State . . .But what am more interested is, what are the Northern leaders doing about the Desert encroachment which is an impending ecological disaster waiting to happen . . To me, that should be a big priority to safe guard the arid Northern States from being rendered less attractive . . and a huge waste in terms of harsh climatic conditions that might lead to crisis in other adjoining states due to gross migration of people to other better climes . .

@jmaine: Watch the video and see how Lamido is aggressively planting trees.

Probably the best way to fight the desert is to plant trees/other plants to hold the soil and to hope that electricity comes online so firewood becomes less attractive.

This has been a nice thread, I learned a lot.

If any of these new ACN guys in Ekiti, Osun, Oyo or Ogun achieve anything less than Sule Lamido has, I will be pissed. It probably means they are stealing a lot of money, incompetent, or otherwise unfit for office.

If Sule Lamido is doing what he is doing in Jigawa, how much more should all other governors be doing?

Jigawa that was essentially some hinterland region of Kano State. There are really no excuses for mediocrity elsewhere in Nigeria.

We all need to hold our governors accountable.

I have not seen any impressive buildings here. Why are our politicians scared of building massive skyscrapers? Look at the quality of that nursing school gate then look at the bungalow buildings inside - what a shame?

Skyscrapers are more costly to build, involve long term construction, expensive maintenance when completed and may not justify the cost under Government management. Such buildings are best left to private businesses in states like Jigawa.
