Executive producer is the owner of the movie while the producer is hired by the Executive producer to produce the film because most times the executive producer might not have the required knowledge to produce the film, he only have the money. If the EP have film knowledge he can be an executive producer and producer same time and can even be the the production manager as well.

In simpler words. Let's assume a movie is a building.

The executive producer is the owner of the building. He's the one that gets to own it after completion. He may or may not know anything about construction (film making). He simply contracts a producer, and brings the money for everything.

The producer is like a contractor he is the one in charge of the constitution. He makes the quotation of the material (cast and crew), and cost estimation of the building. He's the one that employs labour and sources the materials (or entrust it to one of his employees). In fact he's simply the engine head of the whole thing. He doesn't have to be on sit (set) 24/7, but should be there most of the time to make sure the project is going as planned.

The director, usually employed by the producer and works closely with him. Is like the foreman of a construction site. He's the one that call the shots in accordance to the directive of the producer. He often hear him say "action."

Take for example ! I as a producer of a film, might not have enough money to produce a movie, but I have friend, relative or an organization who can finance it.

If he/they put in money for the project to come out, he/they become executive producer but not the owner of the movie.

Okay. I was talking from experience though.
When I say the owner. I mean the person or persons who invest in the project and take the profit or loss that comes from it.
Even if they're more than one person. They all own the movie according to the amount of money they put in.
