Construction activities have been stalled on the Bodo-Bonny Road Project in Rivers State by protesting workers since 14th of September been Tuesday last week.
Workers have been on protest over what they term as unfair treatment of workers by the site management headed by Mr. Thomas Haug (Project Manager), Mr. Roland Betzer (Commercial Manager) and Mr. Ingo Edinger (Technical Manager).
The project construction activities is currently ongoing at two locations; from the Bodo side in Gokana L.G.A and from the Bonny side of the Bonny L.G.A.
The workers at the Bonny side earn way above the workers at the Bodo side using the guise of out of station allowance.
This led to the current protest by workers of the Bodo side of the project.
As usual, the security agencies been tools use for harassment, intimidation, oppression and killings were invited to suppress the voices of the workers.
Still the workers carry out their protest peacefully without any damage to company properties and personnel.
Until yesterday been 20/09/2021 (Monday) when workers were told not to access the construction site as they have all been with a memo in circulation.
This made the workers process peaceful to the Gokana Local Government Secretariat to air their grievances to the council Chairman.
After the Chairman's address, workers converge outside the Secretariat to discussion on the way forward.
Then the Divisional Police Officer and his men attached to Bori Police Station in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State (A fetish man that goes about barefooted on operations) who was invited by the Julius Berger Bodo-Bonny Road Management team out of his jurisdiction started dispersing workers by shot directly at their legs unprovoked.
4 people were shot, with two having critical injuries from the gun shot of which one died same yesterday.
