Attorneys representing Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare today asked online news medium, SaharaReporters to within 24 hours immediately retract its malicious publication of the 20th September, 2021 titled “Exclusive: How Buhari’s Minister Awarded Multi Billion Naira Contracts To Self, Ex-Governor Tinubu, Others As Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Executive” or face a libel suit.

In a letter written to SaharaReporters on behalf of the Minister by Banjo Ayenakin & Co. Legal Practitioners, the lawyers stated that the publication by SaharaReporters is a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the Honourable Minister through a story it described as a conjecture of false and unfounded allegations, riddled with factual inaccuracies, malevolent intent and outright malice aimed at impinging on the credibility of its client.

The Minister’s lawyers pointed out that claims by the medium that he awarded contracts to himself and several others, while serving as National Commissioner at NCC is spurious as only the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), a management board and governing board is vested with powers to approve or award licenses and contracts, as the case may be.

They accused SaharaReporters of falsely and deliberately alleging that their client approved contract awards when in actual fact he had no such powers when he was at the NCC and also in this case, no contracts were awarded, rather only licenses were issued to Nigerians who applied. “The NCC in exercising its regulatory powers under the law issued the licenses upon the approval of the Governing Board”.

“The Management Board of the Nigerian Communication Commission only granted licenses on Value Added Service (VAS) Contract to deserving persons and no contract of any sort whatsoever was awarded in relation to this as falsely, maliciously and spuriously alleged by you. Also, our client was not awarded any contract neither was he issued with a VAS license as alleged in your false and misleading publication”, they added.

“The publication has caused a lot of damage to our client’s hard-earned reputation which he has painstakingly and carefully built over a long period as different people have inundated him with sporadic calls over your false and unfounded allegations which is libelous and has irreparably dented our client’s image”, Dare's attorneys declared.

SaharaReporters was therefore advised to pull down the publication, with a retraction duly published within 24 hours of receipt of the letter, failure of which the Minister would have no other option but to slam a N5bn libel suit on the media organization for defamation of character and aggravated damages.
