Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said that if the country breaks up in any way or becomes the subject of what some people will like it to be, “all of us will lose out.”

This is as he urged journalists to do everything to ensure that the country remains safe, secure, and united.

Osinbajo stated this on Monday when he received at the Presidential Villa, the national executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists led by its President, Chris Isiguzo.

Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, disclosed this in a statement titled ‘Osinbajo to journalists: your civic vigilance, steadfast belief in rule of law, commendable’.

According to the Vice President, “this country is ours, whether we are press, politicians or religious people, the country is ours, and we must do everything to ensure that the country remains safe, secure, and united, and this so important.

“I thank you for your civic vigilance, for the very kind words you have spoken about Nigeria, and for remaining steadfast in your belief for the rule of law and press freedom in the country.”

He added that “as I keep saying, the elite in our country, those of us who have had the benefit of education, positions and all of that, we owe millions of our people who are poor, who have no access and have no voice, a duty to ensure that we don’t let things become worse for them.”

Referring to other places where the press and government collaborated to protect the information space, Osinbajo called on stakeholders in Nigeria to replicate such efforts in the interest of security and unity.

your voices as respected members of the fourth estate of the realm, your voices are very important in moderating the kinds of views that we hear constantly which in the end, if care is not taken subverts the polity.”

He added that “it is important for us to continue to emphasize that the unity of this country is crucial because if this country breaks up in any way or becomes the subject of what some people will like it to be, all of us will lose out. Obviously, the elite will survive in any way but the vast majority of our people will not.

“So, I will urge that we should as much as possible do whatever we can in our spaces that we occupy to keep emphasizing that we cannot afford a situation where the national unity of this country is compromised or where the country is made the theater of conflict and all sorts of insurgencies and crimes.”

Earlier in his opening remarks, the president of the union, Isiguzo, commended the initiatives of the Buhari regime in the areas of employment opportunity creation, skills training for the youth, among others.

He said in acknowledgment of its role in the society, the union has over the years “engaged in training and retraining of Journalists with assistance from various development partners to build capacity of journalists to effectively bring to public attention humanitarian situations in the country in a fair manner, honestly, and constructively.”
He also noted that the union frowned against fake news and would do everything in its powers to check the menace, calling on “journalists to be careful not to be tempted into propagating fake news by ensuring proper and adequate checks before stories are written and transmitted for public consumption.”

This man dey always talk anyhow.

If he becomes the president he will just end up as a weakling president like GEJ.

There are Countries that are not as huge or have the population of Nigeria, but are doing fine.

One Nigeria can't be force on people.

Professor Yemi Osinbajo is a good orator, but it's disappointing to not see in his speech how I will personally lose when Nigeria breaks up.

One hypocritical thing about these polticians is that they always make the impression that balkanization must be violent. Please countries agree to stop existing as one and there won't be any war; Nigeria can follow suit.

Biafra may not be better for Niger Deltans because Niger Deltans may end up living one form of subjugation for another. The argument Igbos have made for their freedom is the desire to be free from Hausa-Yoruba domination. That argument also applies to the average Niger Deltan. Igbo, no doubt, will be the major ethnic group if Biafra is actualised. Ijaws may have a stake due to their numbers. What about the Ogonis, Urhobo-Isokos, Itsekiris, Efiks, etc? Where will they fit in at the national level? The sad reality is that another Nigeria will just be made manifest and resentments will build up. What will really be the fate of minorities? Will they fare better in Biafra or alone? In Nigeria, big groups such as Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo checkmate each other’s excesses very well. Who will checkmate that of Igbos in the new nation?

Huncle, I don't remember mentioning Biafra in my comment. If a politician says we should remain as one, I just need him or her to convince me why we should.

The contraption called Nigeria has existed for more than 100 years (amalgamation was in 1914) and we are still struggling to love one another. That's my point, sir.

This man is becoming more ridiculous with each passing day. What exactly are we gaining as one nation? What exactly are Southerners benefiting from one Nigeria?

So seizing our resources and exporting terrorism to us is a good thing?

Someone should tell this appology of a pastor that bandits are now active in Lagos. They're also active in FCT now, so no where is safe even for the elite.

Lol, when desperate parasites talk, you will know!

Southerners have different options available for them after break up, they include;
1. Southern Nigeria.
2. Biafra/Oduduwa.
3. Biafra/Oduduwa/Niger Delta.
4. Biafra rep/Oduduwa rep/Niger Delta rep/Ibom rep/Benin republic.

All the options I mentioned above are feasible and having seen how parasitism destroyed Nigeria, we will decide that everyone will control their resources and pay only tax to the central government. Also, presidency could be rotated so that no section feels cheated and it will be in the constitution.

Nigeria is gone totally and the only reasonable thing, especially for Southerners is to cut North loose and reduce our liabilities to the barest minimum.

He is lying. Urging journalist to make sure the country is safe? How? Are the journalists safe themselves?
The vice president said a while ago that he doesn't know what restructuring means!
Can you believe that crap? We need journalists to report the truth, nothing more nothing less.
