Rivaldo Says Ronaldo Is More Humble Than People Think, Because Of This Action by ogbiwa: 7:09am On Sep 29, 2021
Brazil legend Rivaldo believes Cristiano Ronaldo proved against Aston Villa last weekend that he is "more humble than people think."

Ronaldo has come in for criticism in the past for being too self-centred and arrogant, with reports during his final months at Juventus claiming he had been 'isolated' in the dressing room.

Since returning to Manchester United, however, the Portuguese star has had a positive impact on his new team-mates, both on and off the pitch.

Not only is he scoring goals, four in his first four matches, he's also inspiring others with his levels of professionalism and dedication.

Despite all of that, there was one area where it had been expected Ronaldo would pull rank - set-pieces.

Upon his arrival back at Old Trafford, there was a great debate over who would take United's free-kicks and penalties - Ronaldo or current dead ball incumbent Bruno Fernandes.

The penalty debate was put to the test for the first time against Aston Villa last weekend.

Fernandes retained responsibility from 12 yards, and duly hammered his effort well over the bar as United fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat.

It was a frustrating end to a frustrating game for Red Devils fans, but Brazil legend Rivaldo believes it also showcased something important about Ronaldo's character.

Speaking to Betfair, he said: "Bruno Fernandes missed a stoppage time penalty that led to a Manchester United's loss to Aston Villa, but he was right to take it, even though Cristiano Ronaldo was on the pitch.

"Last season, Fernandes was the designated penalty-taker - and he has a great record - and Ronaldo respected that on Saturday, proving that he is more humble than many people think.

"After the match, Fernandes apologised to his fans and team-mates on social media which is a good action, although not necessary.

"The most important thing now for United is that Solskjaer and both players decide who should take penalties from now on.

"The Portuguese players are friends, and I don't imagine they are going to fall out, and damage the team's unity, over who takes penalties."

I don't think it was necessarily humility that made him leave the pen, but rather maturity. A younger Ronaldo would probably have dragged that, especially in front of his home fans. But anyway, some great men have played this game o. Rivaldo!

hmm....I see nothing wrong in fernandez taking it ahead of Cr7 becoz he is their main taker n av scored almost 20+ from set pieces missing only 2 or 3
cr7 can or may start taking it only if fernandez keeps missing or if bruno decide to pass it on to him..
cr7 n messi are big names BT wont want to bend d status quo of their new clubs by taking d penalties except d current kickers allow them to take them
I think cr7 would b allowed to take them in UCL n letta in EPL, bcoz i dnt see him aving a reasonable goal stats without penalties...

guy calm down abeg....man.u wahala isnt about ole bt d squad
even if u sack him n pep comes in, e would still struggle with dt flat defense n midfield dt united gat
Juve did same mistake, sacked allegri, sacked sarri n also sacked pirlo in d 3 seasons cr7 spent n they realized n correct their mistake
cr7 budget is for big clubs like chelsea, city n PSG dt av quality players already n dnt need more players
not for a united dt need so many new buys to replace some average players..
d point is dt united should get quality players in midfield n defense, or else dey keep changing coach n still going troohiless
if dey cnt get players due to wages, dey should offload d huge wage bill of cr7 n instead invest in ur squad like barca did with messi n juve did last season.
cr7 cnt keep scoring, united would keep conceding n d fans would keep complaining for a new coach ...my opinion

I swear, u took d words out of my mouth....its simply maturity and a younger cr7 would av taken it ahead of fernandez...
just like a younger neyma dragging penalty with cavani dt was d real taker wen he first joined Paris, assuming ney is matured he won't try such n also I remembered balotelli did same to gerrard in Liverpool
but matured players like Suarez, mess n cr7 would easily allow the ex taker continues unless he passes the chance to them, jus like messi wasnt concerned about ney taking it just last 2 weeks

See wetin u dey talk.
Coach that has lingard, Radford, greenwood and Cavani for attack, wetin him need Sancho for

If no be inexperience coach, wetin make him go dey play pgboba for wing His lack of experience make him thinks he doesn't need confirmed no.4 instead went for Sancho when he still has like four different players he can utilize in place of Sancho. What do you say of a Coach who can't call greenwood aside and talk to him about his selfishness during astonvilla match Or didn't you watched the match?

@bold, so for your mind, Psg, Chelsea and man city get players pass man utd abi? Even come big pass man u join!

I still sure say for your mind lampard na good coach too

There's nothing special in leaving penalties for Bruno. After all, the guy has been the team's set piece taker before his arrival. Unless there's a dent on his conversation ratio, no sensible player will drag penalties with Fernandez as it will cause unnecessary chaos. It was the profligacy of Rashford & Pogba that made him the team's PK taker when he joined. if he continues to miss like he did last weekend, then Ronaldo can step in or Fernandez decide to give am out of respect.......even at Madrid, he didn't assume that role immediately.

Thanks bro ole is a coach with no tactics using Pogba at d wing is one of the problem Pogba doesn't possessed any quality a winger has except for creating chance and he awalys slow ball possession same with mcfred they neither contribute to the attack nor the defense

Fernandes is the designated taker of penalty in Manchester united. He's the vice captain and can order Ronaldo to f**k off. If Ronaldo thinks he's returned to the Manchester united of 11 years ago, then he's probably retařded

When stupid posts like this are made, people are bound to have different opinions!
How was the old fraud humble because he didn't show interest in taking a penalty that was already designated for another person to take? It's like saying mane is humble for always allowing Salah to take penalties when he knows that Salah is the one designated to take them. Ronaldo overlooked the pen because he wasn't the one designated to take it, nothing special there, not even worth talking.
Messi has a few times in his career given penalties to his team mates and even passed it to his team mates. That the true definition of humility
