The Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra and Biafra Independence Movement (MASSOB/BIM) have reacted to the arrest of a well Known actor Chiwetalu Agu in Onitsha for wearing a T-shirt with the rising sun insignia and red -black-red coloured wrapper believed to be associated with proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB).

The group said “No known legislation bans the use of Biafra shirt with the Rising Sun Emblem.

In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity to Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, Chris Mocha chided Nigerian soldiers saying the arrest of Agu amounted to “trying to criminalize Biafra struggle”, adding that “T.shirt or Vest Inscripted Biafra did not in any way constitute security threat”.

Agu was arrested on Thursday at Upper Iweka area of Onitsha for adorning a shirt with inscription Biafra rising Sun .

Mocha said “Biafra flag is a symbol of Biafran Nation and did not belong to either IPOB or MASSOB.

“It belongs to Biafrans and anyone is entitled to use it including Chief Chiwetaru Agu. No law in Nigeria prohibits one from wearing clothes inscripted or designed with Biafra colours. Biafra is a nation that was recognised by some UN member states in 1967-70 and after the unification of Nigeria in 1970 till now, no country withdrew their recognition or support for Biafra”, Mocha said.

It was for that reason he continued, that on May, 22, 2000, the movement for the actualisation of the sovereign state of Biafra (MASSOB) led by Chief Ralph Uwazuruike redeclared the defunct Republic of Biafra in Aba.

He said the event of Onitsha where Agu was humiliated, manhandled and gruesomely beaten before he was taken into custody for further torture is highly condemnable by all well-meaning Southerners.

According to him, the military action against Chief Chiwetalu Agu is evil, barbaric and against democratic principles and his fundamental human rights of freedom of movement and expression.

He wondered why Agu was arrested while people in the likes of Sheikh Gumi who has been the spokesman for the dreaded Bandits and Fulani herdsmen that are killing people every day walk the streets, free.

He urged the Anambra State Government to use its power to negotiate for the immediate release of Chief Agu

Good one from MASSOB.

They should take it up with the Federal Government.

What they proscribed is IPOB and not MASSOB or Biafran flag.

MASSOB should also now take up the struggle but in a less violent and more peaceful, smart, civil and diplomatic way.

The major thing is the struggle for the emancipation of Biafra continues.

Its an ideology.

North must get sense by force.

One good thing that came out of Chiwetal Agu's arrest is that it exposed the fact that many Nigerians, including the security forces, dont even know that to use the Biafran flag not against the law

The Nigerian military should have known that the average Igbo person has sympathy for Biafra. You can't take that away from them. Arrest him & more people will go his way as the colors of future cloths will be black, green and red
