Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, on Sunday, reacted sharply to the zoning which gave the North the chairmanship of the party and left the presidency open, describing it as incongruous, unfair, unwholesome and a recipe for disaster.

This was just as George noted that the new arrangement was a threat to the unwritten doctrine within PDP, insisting that come 2023, the presidential candidate of the party must come from the South for equity and fairness since the national chairmanship of PDP had been zoned to the North.

George, who is also the Atona Oodua, gave this position in a release titled: “Zoning is about equity and fairness,” citing the laid down rules and regulations of the party which upheld that position concerning sharing of six key offices in the country, since 1999.

Nigerian Tribune reports that the party a few days ago at one of its meetings threw open the presidency slot, saying all the six zones of the country can now contest for the seat, come 2023.

“The zoning arrangement which gave the North the chairmanship of our party and leaves the presidency open is incongruous, unwholesome and a recipe for disaster.

“Once the chairmanship is now in the North, the presidency must come to the South. There must not be any ambiguity at all. This should be crystal clear. Hanging the presidency in the air like a hovering craft without a landing zone is dangerous, unfair and wrong,” George said.

George, while insisting on the South producing the next president on PDP platform, said the six key positions in the country were zoned by the party because of the necessity of national belonging and accommodation, noting that it was to ensure that every section of the country “have a sense of equitable participation in our national life.”

He added that this had been the enduring pivot of the country’s democratic experience since 1999.

“There is an old, enlightening principle laid down by the founding fathers of our party since 1999 that six key positions must always be zoned to the six geo-political constituents of our nation to ensure equity and orderly balance of power.

“The six key positions are the President, Vice President, National Chairman, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

“Naturally, this means that if the Presidency goes to the North, the Chairman of the party goes

to the South and vice versa. All these positions are zoned because of the necessity of national belonging and accommodation. Every section of this nation must have a sense of equitable participation in our national life. This has been the enduring pivot of our democratic experience since 1999,” the PDP chieftain said.

Speaking further, George, lamented that it was rather inexplicable that the stakeholders in PDP cannot be firm and decisive about an issue that would inevitably affect the future of the party and the nation itself, “in a nation reeling with divisive politics, marred with discord and ethnic distrust.”

George, therefore, called on all PDP stakeholders to come together and reaffirm what he called the great vision of the party’s founding fathers, saying this was not the time for uncertainties and half measures, even as he warned that PDP can reclaim the centre in 2023 only if every section of this great nation was treated as co-equal and a significant partner in the national voyage.

“This is not the time for uncertainties and half measures. Our vision must be clear. Our goal must be certain. Our resolve must be sincere,” he said.

“There is no other way. Zoning of all the six key offices will continue to ensure a strong and healthy democratic nation anchored on the fairness doctrine.

“Let us do what is right. Let us do what is proper. Let us revisit the precedents that have sustained us and put us in good stead among Nigeria people.

“This is my advice to all the ranks and files of the party. And this is the only way we can appeal to the generality of our people and win the presidency in 2023,” he added.

Even though PDP can not win in 2023 they are doing everything to repackage and sell Atiku to us.

It is a plan for power to remain up north.

The South is not united after all.
Forget all the shenanigans of Southern Governors forum resolutions. They're all scheming for their personal interest.

It is interesting and vital to note here that the PDP which many of us (igbos) still proudly support and adore was in power for 16 solid years and in those years there were 4 Presidential Inaugurations and on none of those was an Igbo man found worthy by the PDP of even Vice Presidency and we are still bold to say it is the APC that has barely finished one tenure that doesn't want to give power to Igbos. Odi nma.

NOW; Seriously, let's be sincere. As things stand today politically, why would the APC even hand power to us Igbos in 2023?
on what grounds?
on what records?
on what politics?
Is power given to anyone?
Is it an appeasement or a gift?

The APC is a political party.
The main focus of a political Party is to hold power and keep it to enable it deliver on its agenda.
So if the APC reads that the SE does not want the Presidency or does not have the capacity to help them win and keep power, they will stick with the regions that can and work with individuals who are interested.

Ka Chineke mezie okwu.

Hmmmmmmm, this is deep!

The same politics of hate you played last election, won’t help you again in 2023

Even supporting a politician in today’s democracy spells doom.

This old fool should go and sit down joor! How many states can he win for pdp in general election? I don't see anybody in Southern pdp that can wrestle power from this present regime and if pdp give their ticket to South Easterner he won't get 3m votes from the East because 90% of ipob members wil not vote and if ipob take no elections in biafra seriously in 2023 there will be low turn out in the East for 2023 elections.pdp and apc candidate from the South West will give apc victory in the southwest I dont even think igbo will vote massively for pdp candidate from southwest the best hope for pdp is a northern candidate (not necessarily Atiku) apchit zombies nairaland chapter can not play mind game with me with their southern unity and Southern candidate their Southern candidate only mean southwest tinubu candidacy nothing more

I personally preferred Atiku to Buhari

but anybody trying to sell a northern candidate to Nigerians right now will further divide this country!

If the North is wise and they are really interested in the unity of this country, this is where they back down except the wise ones amongst them are no more!

The PDP ignores the fact that zoning was necessitated by the skewed and lopsided political structure created by north through its military dictators to favor only the north politically and economically.
Which southern presidential aspirant can win if north is also aspiring for presidency?
Re: Bode George: Leaving Presidency Ticket Open In PDP Unfair, Recipe For Disaster by mandax: 6:08am On Oct 11, 2021
Remove federal character principle, remove quota system, put resource control, education to be controlled by the states, roads and other devt infrastructures to be done by the states.

Then leave PDP presidential ticket open for every region to contest.

The same Bode George that advised PDP to give Chairmanship to South bcoz he wanted to contest.

He wanted PDP to have a Northern president bcoz APC would go for a Southern president believing that North would still prefer their own irrespective of the Party.

Why is Bode George insisting on southern president now?

He never advocated for it not even 2 weeks back.

Could it be bcoz the chairman seat has left him at the park?

Greedy man.

Bode George should come out for president if he thinks he's good enough and stop castigating others.
