A subtitle translation is a translation of the information that displays on-screen as someone speaks. Subtitle translation is, in essence, everyday labour with audiovisual resources that necessitates both technical and linguistic expertise.

The “speech act is in focus; verbal intents and visual consequences are more significant than linguistic components in isolation,” according to the subtitle translation. This offers the linguist some linguistic leeway; moreover, “subtitling must work against good literary and theatrical tropes like stage direction, footnotes, author's remarks, and so on,” which help the completed translation flow more fluidly.

The technicalities

Companies that specialise in this sort of translation usually get their own language tool which the translator utilises, so a customer can rest certain that their needs will be satisfied.

These criteria (or technical information) usually include the amount of characters that should show on the display and the duration of time that a subtitle should be shown on the display.

Subtitles are generally one or two lines long, with a maximum length of 35 characters; however, they can be as long as 39 or 43 characters in some circumstances. They're either aligned-left or centred. However, subtitles may display vertically in other places, such as Japan. The majority of clients, particularly in television and movies, ask for a two-line subtitle of 60-70 letters that stays on screen for 5-8 secs. Subtitles should be displayed at a rate of no more than 12 characters per second, with lines containing no more than 70 syllables each subtitle, to provide viewers ample time to read them.

There are now professional subtitle translation programmes that work with pixels rather than characters, allowing for commensurate lettering, which allows linguists to write as much text as viable depending on the text size used and the actual screen space available, but this operating system is still pricey and not extensively used.
