That Second Niger Bridge is an evil project for Igbos, not minding the bridge would be tolled that bridge is constructed way below in a way that no ship would pass. It wasn't giving the modern construct for the possibility of ship passage. At the appropriate time Igbos will do what needs to be done for future possibilities in that bridge and port

We will have to build a 2nd port in Ogbaru area before the 2nd Niger bridge. I am willing to put my own money down for it. That low hanging bridge can never stop us.

If Onitsha port is allowed to function then the second Niger Bridge becomes useless.
Put it this way, "For Lagos to survive, Eastern ports need to be closed down"

Let me explain it better for you.
Hope you know Onitsha and Environs very well. Look at that Second Niger Bridge, where it is heading to, you'll realise that it is a Lagos project not East. It is designed to facilitate movement of human resources and containers down east from Lagos Port (it is a one way direction). Which in fact is aimed for the sole beneficiary to be Lagos and Lagos alone.

If there was need for second Niger Bridge which will benefit Ndigbo on either side of the Niger, it will be at the opposite direction (far right of the 1st bridge when looking at it from Onitsha, towards Ose).
You doubt this? Ask anyone from Onitsha, the bridge is so needed at that side that Ferries still operate there and people and essential goods are loaded together there.

Now back to the port. Once the port operates, there will be no need for any forced/conditioned movement to lagos, that particular 2nd Niger Bridge which was designed to bypasses Igbo towns in Delta, thus heavily decongesting Lagos, reshaping the dynamics of economy in Nigeria as most containers (>70%) from Apapa port ends up in the East, heavily reshaping the chart of cities of interest in Nigeria , and retaining most especially human resources in Igboland.

This will make what was happening during Michael Ọkpara's tenure in 1960s repeat itself (Read about what he was doing in PortHarcourt). If that happens, at least six economic powerhouses will spring out from either sides of the Niger, which will redefine the economic regional chart of Nigeria.

You now understand why according to Nigeria, Onitsha port must go down?

These are things any deep thinker already knows. One of the basic reasons why the country couldn't function properly was due to nihilistic worldview of the various ethnicities at the helm of affairs. Anything that is not of primary interest to their own region is automatically shot down regardless of whether it would help the country to advance or not. It is only in Nigeria that you will find a country of 200 million people with such GDP yet everything is concentrated in one place/city. They would rather watch Lagos suffocate and collapse under the weight of Nigeria than see another place/region take a chunk of the economic benefits.

That's the reason why they're allowing Lagosians to suffer everyday and businesses incure losses due man-hours lost on traffic jams everyday. That's why they would rather be spending billions of borrowed money repairing federal highways every year yet heavy duty cargo vehicles keep falling and causing harzards and economic losses.

What stops the federal government from building a port in Onitsha and fully dredging the Niger River to it knowing the economic potentials?

What stops them from making laws that would ensure all oil companies build their headquarters in the region they're working in? Is P.H, Uyo, Warri or Owerri not good enough to house these companies??

What stops them from putting in place standard facilities in Enugu airport so that international airlines will have the interest to operate from there?

Even when you look at the so-called second Niger bridge they're building, you will see how they deliberately created another problem while solving allegedly solving another. Does it mean they don't ever intend to make Onitsha port viable for ships to berth, even in the future, considering how low the bridge is?

They just hate anything that concerns not just Igbos but including the minorities of Eastern Nigeria. The only reason it seems as if the Eastern minorities are tolerated a bit is because they want to drill the oil wells in peace while allowing them to receive little crumbs. Otherwise, they too are suffering as much as Igbos if not more if you look deep down. But due to their own inferiority complex, lack of cohesion and lack of foresight, they don't even seem to understand the extent of indignities being meted on them instead they relate their plight to Igbos and console themselves that they're better off.

If only Nigeria has wise leaders who truly believe in the country and want the best for it. They will do the things I mentioned and watch the country become peaceful, united and economically prosperous. However, as the fools they are, they will keep chasing shadows until they wake up one day to see the country split into pieces!!

Even the existing port they constructed is too small. That one would be converted into a modern jetty or loading bay and barges will be used to ferry containers to it while a befitting port will be in Ogbaru.

If we are not able to achieve it in Nigeria, we will surely do so in Biafra. Igboland needs at least two viable ports in Onitsha, Oguta or Azumiri.

With the coming of Aftcta, developing Onitsha port will go a long way in promoting trade and industrialization in SE but no, anything that will help Igboland is like poison to them.

S’East Shippers protest suspension of Onitsha River port

•As FG orders contractors to terminate rail at ports

The South-East Shippers Association has protested the constant suspension of activities at Onitsha River Port in Anambra State.

The group said that Onitsha port is a natural deposit which Nigeria should focus on the revenue it generates rather than politics of ethnicity.

The President of Anambra State Shippers Association, Mr. Emma Akpaka, in a protest letter described the suspension of activities at the port as politically motivated against the Southeast zone.

The group lamented the dilapidated Niger road that connects the River port to the Main Market that has become a death trap for the users. “We see it as political sabotage against us. We don’t want what happened to Warri port to happen in Onitsha port. Warri Wharf was labeled a gateway for arms and ammunition. Those who should protest were silent because they did not know it was conspiracy, until those who were illegally disengaged moved to the creeks to forment trouble.

When Onitsha River port became operational in 2017, we celebrated and expected that going forward, Onitsha will be in the same page with Jakarta in Indonesia, Guangzhou in China, Bangkok in Thailand among others.

Indeed that expectation was right, but there is no enabling environment to augment the contributions of the Federal Ministry of Transport.

Niger Street, the only road that links the wharf to Onitsha main market has collapsed. Our expectation since 2017 is that this road would be rehabilitated with speed. But the road is so bad that any heavy-duty truck that tries to pass through it must fall.

“Therefore, Anambra State shipper are calling on the state government to come to our aid immediately by giving this road a facelift. this under the guise of internally generated revenue. This action has frustrated many of our customers.

“We equally advice governor Willie Obiano to facilitate the building of a jetty at the bank of the River Niger. Meanwhile as part of efforts to decongest the ports and end the intractable gridlock along Apapa- Oshodi Expressway, the Federal Government, has ordered relevant authorities to ensure that all rail lines terminate at the ports.

SOUTHEAST HAS THE HIGHEST IMPORTER YET THEY WANT TO KILL THE PORTS IN THE REGION.

So that they will continue to tell us the region is landlocked and barren.

Stop dreaming bro. The port can only function after Biafra is restored because that's when we will build it. Even the so-called second niger bridge will not be finished in nigeria because they see it as a political bridge. Once Biafra is restored, we shall knock down those useless bridges and build a world-class bridge as seen in the developed world over the River Niger. Please let's always face reality when commenting. The dungeon called nigeria has nothing for us.
