Rivers give identity to communities in African societies. This identity pattern also applies to rural African societies. In Anambra state, Nigeria, one of the top tourism sites is the great Uchu river. It is located in Umuchu, Aguata local government area of Imo state.

The name of the community – Umuchu – was derived from the name of the river, Uchu. History has it that the great Uchu river protected people of the communities during times of war in the olden days. People ran to the river for protection and when enemies pursued them to that place, such enemies perished mysteriously. The great Uchu river is today, one of the top tourist attractions in the entire South East region of Nigeria. Watch the video below for more on the great Uchu river.
