Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has made a case for Nigerians writing the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination, noting that we should not be made to write the exams every two years.

He said this on Wednesday at a virtual forum where he interacted with Nigerian Fellows of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. The interaction included a Q & A session where questions ranging from education, health, and youth engagement issues were posed to the Vice President.

Osinbajo emphasised that Nigeria is an English-speaking country and should be given some concession.

As an English-speaking country, we should be beneficiaries of some concession as opposed to being forced every two years to take the same test especially if you have passed it once before.”

Countries which currently mandate the IELTS examination for prospective immigrants include but not limited to the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, and Australia.

Many wouldn't have been writing the exam if your country is in order!

Exactly! I support Prof Osinbajo on this, we shouldn't as an English speaking country be taking the IELTS.

We aren't regarded as a country, let alone an English-speaking country.

80% of Nigerians writing that exam are under frustration and want to leave the country.

Way to go.We are an English speaking country colonised by Britain and besides, the English language was Nigeria's lingual franca until the malos came and bastardized everything.

Common South Africa that got independence many years after us is the only country exempted from IELST exams in the continent. What a shame for giant of Africa.

So by your thinking, Nigeria is in the class of Saudi Arabia? Why do you think the country is making great headway far ahead of this contraption despite that it is the headquarters of world Islam?

Look at how you reason, other countries in Africa like Ghana, South Africa, Gabon, Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia travel to these countries for education, they write this exam. So what are you saying.

Way to go prof. We are part of commonwealth. English is our lingua franca. You even write better English than many Americans. Even if we have to write it, why every 2years as if you validate your English every other year. It's an element of colonialism.

That's the problem with him, Suggestions all the time, no action taken.
Every time Nigeria should, Nigeria shouldn't, Nigeria will, Nigeria will not, Our government will, we will. All his speeches

Nobody is forcing anyone to take IELTS every 2 years. It's your choice to take it or not to take it.

If you feel it's a requirement for what you are looking for, then take it. The last time I checked, even people whose mother tongue is English from countries like Barbados, Jamaica, New Zealand or even England do take it if it's a requirement for them to migrate to other countries.

There are other issues Nigerians are facing that requires your attention and IELTS is not one of them.
