There is a small ethnic group who live in the mountains and settlements of South Sudan, they are the Latuka tribe. They are farmers and also herders. They rear sheep, cattle, and goats, they also grow sorghum, maize, yam, ground nuts, and potatoes.

The puzzling and fascinating aspect of their culture is their marriage rights. One thing about the people of Latuka is that if a man desires to marry a woman he must kidnap her and put her in his house, secondly, the father of the kidnapped bride to be must indicate that he is in support of their union by whipping him

It is not stated if the whippings are severe or not, but what I can tell you is that the woman has no say on the choice of man she wants, especially if the one that kidnaps her is not her preferred choice.

In different parts of the world, a consensual wedding ceremony occurs, where the father of the bride's hands over his daughter amicably to the groom after the groom and the bride have agreed to get married and live together forever.

However in the Latuka tribe when a man sees a lady and desires to marry her he will abduct her from her family home, then return to her home to officially ask for her hand in marriage. He won't come alone, instead, he will come with his relatives to seek consent.

With the lady still being in the house of the man, her father has two choices, either to agree to the proposal or disagree with it. If the father agrees to the proposal he shows this by beating his expected son-in-law. This ceremony signifies that the man is willing to take any beating for her. That is, he is ready to make sacrifices for the woman he confesses to loving.

However, if the father of the girl doesn't give an affirmative answer of yes, the ball is left in the hands of the suitor to either return the kidnapped daughter or to get married to her despite her father's refusal.

The Latuka tribe generally lives a communal life, everybody shares everything as nothing is hidden from anyone. They have no king, but they have elders who are conferred with power and authority to direct them.

They believe in ancestral worship and nature, they are a traditionalist who has not conformed to the other religious and cultural influences. Despite the criticism of their marriage rights, they have stayed true to who they are.
