Goal brings you everything you need to know about the Black Queens' African Women's Cup of Nations qualifier against Randy Waldrum's Super Falcons

Ghana square up against reigning African champions Nigeria in a make or break Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualification first round, second leg encounter.

Uchenna Kanu’s first-half double propelled the Super Falcons to a 2-0 victory over the Black Queens in the reverse fixture played in Lagos on Wednesday.

And to qualify for the second round – where they will face either Niger Republic or Cote d’Ivoire, Mercy Tagoe’s women must erase their two-goal deficit before scoring at least one more goal to see them through.

Ghana are yet to win the biennial African football showpiece, with their best performance a second-place finish in 1998, 2002, and 2006.

When is the game?

The qualifier has been scheduled for 17:00 (West African Time) on Sunday, October 24.

Where is the clash of the titans

Accra Sports Stadium, Accra.

Waldrum Confident Of Falcons’ Victory Against Ghana In Accra

2 October 23, 2021

Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum believes his side can still do better despite a 2-0 victory over archrivals Ghana in the first round, first leg of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Lagos.

A first half attacking masterpiece from Uchenna Kanu saw her net twice as Waldrum’s side bounced back from Aisha Buhari Cup misadventure to claim a first-leg lead over their west African rivals.

Buoyed by his ladies’ home win, the former Trinidad and Tobago coach hailed his team for showing great character but has moved quickly to point out that they will be focused on reaching the next round.

“We are extremely excited about the win. It’s important to get a win at home and keeping a clean sheet too was very important for us to go into the second leg,” said Waldrum.

“In the first half, we came out with a good attacking mentality. In the second half, we played a little more off the counter.

“But the players fought really hard, I thought Chiamaka came up with a big-time save to keep a clean sheet which was very important for us. We all understand this is just half of the job.”

Nine-time African winners will travel to Accra for a second leg date on Sunday and the American tactician has assured his side will leave nothing to chance against Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo’s team.

“The staff will get back and we would have some conversations and watch the video of how we want to approach the second leg,” he noted.

“We all know that when you do home and away it’s important to keep a clean sheet at home. “But it’s also important to score a goal in the second leg because the away goal really counts for you.

“So, we will have to find a balance of making sure that we are attacking but also protecting the two-goal lead that we have.”

A win or at least a draw in Ghana on Sunday will see Nigeria through to the second round, where they will square up against Niger Republic or Cote d’Ivoire in February next year.

Ghana are still without their captain and most influential player Elizabeth Ado (Ama Pele). She is being punished by the Ghanaian Football Association because she tweeted that they should organise more friendly matches for the Black Queens.

Picture 3 = A journalist called Addo a "problem child" and this was her reply. Nigeria's Faith Ikidi providing moral support to Elizabeth Addo.

The girls hopefully should do us proud again today. They should consolidate on the first leg advantage.
Meanwhile, why is the Ghanian FA victimising the poor Elizabeth for stating the obvious?

Why are we always aversed to the truth? Same thing that happened to the Falcons that they stayed for a long time without any warm up friendly games.

Ghana and other African women teams that Nigeria used to beat black and blue then has now become nightmares to the Football federation & The team. SMH
Your mates are vying how to conquer the Global stage, you folks are here dragging pots of soup with lowly placed african teams.
8th time African women’s cup holders and NOTHING to prove on the international stage. Nonsense!

The current reality is a reflection of Female leagues globally....how strong is our league compared with what we use to have in the past?

Well, I expected them to do better, most of them are Europe based.
They should be a force to rekon with at the Global stage.
They have dominated Africa for long, now we need something different.

No correlation, the match is about Awcon qualifiers which the girls won the first leg

Of course that should be the case, but most of them are aging...forget the ages they are parading.

Another factor is getting the perfect coach for them. The Super Falcons are known for a very strong midfield and very potent wing play, but with the last two coaches, their play has been very boring to watch. Anywhere belle face, kick and follow...The last time we saw them play a free-flowing football with bags of goals, a Nigeria ex-Super Falcons player was in charge.

I know, but a team like Ghana shouldn’t be giving them nightmares.
Remember last decades when they were back-to-back AWC and no team in Africa could lace their boots.
But now mention Ghana, Cameroun, SA. They tremble. I’m not even talking about international competition embarassed
Cos they never go beyond group stages bb
