We all can recalled the set back military government had caused Nigeria starting from 1966 when Major Nzeogwu and his comrade overthrew the then Prime Minister of Nigeria setting the stage for political crisis in Nigeria.

The military coup of 1966 led to the death of Sarduana, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Chief Okotie Eboh ( then finance minister ) who happens to come from Delta state in the present Niger delta region.

Others who died include Chief Ladoke Akintola of Western Nigeria.

Ortom didn't do or say anything in respect of the killings in Agatu, it was until they started killing Tiv people in Guma and other areas before he started speaking out. In fact when the Agatu people met him, he told them to " go and meet your senator". To even add insult to injury he wanted to cede one of the islands in Agatu to the Fulanis so that their cattle could pass.
