Setonji Koshoedo, Deputy National Secretary-elect of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday said the 21-storey building that collapsed on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi last week was a result of negligence on the part of Lagos State Government.

The yet to be completed skyscraper owned by Fourscore Heights Limited collapsed on November 1, trapping over 50 persons, including Femi Osibona, the firm’s managing director, his friend, Wale Bob-Oseni, and personal assistant, Oyinye Enekwe.

However, nine persons survived the incident with three of them treated and discharged from the Lagos Island General Hospital. The six others still on admission at the hospital are NurudeenSolagbade, Timileyin Oduntan, Waliu Lateef, Ahmed Kinleku (a Benin Republic national), Sunday Monday and Adeniran Mayowa.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the weekend disclosed that 42 bodies had been recovered from the site, while 15 survived. He also said chances of getting any more survivor is very slim.

Speaking in an interview with Daily Independent, Koshoedo, an architect and a former member of the House of Representatives, said it is unfortunate that incidence of building collapse keeps reoccurring in Lagos state without any concrete action taken by the government to avert it.

n his words “It is so unfortunate that such is reoccurring. It simply as a result of negligence of the government. This is not the first time a building collapsed in Lagos, why hasn’t the government taken necessary steps to such again. The government of Lagos should be proactive and innovative in providing solutions to problems. This they lack”.

On what can be done to avert further occurrence, he said while there is a need for a fresh review of the Building Code, there is also need to check every stage of building production toensure every detail is complied with.

He also said enjoined government to remove bottlenecks that frustrate builders in the state, saying this has led to many builders cutting corners.

“A fresh review of the Building Code is very necessary. Past reviews were focused on how to make more money for government or their cronies rather than solving project development problems. There is need to check every stage of building production to proffer the best way to handle the processing”.

“The government should also remove the bottlenecks that frustrate builders. The unnecessary hindrances make developers to cut corners and must be removed. These and thorough monitoring for compliance will help to prevent further occurrence”.

Not sure if its just negligence but high level of corruption. I'm sure alot of builders are allowed to build with inferior materials, inappropriate mixtures & beyond the initial limit given to them after buying their ways through. Also many high profile individuals having affiliations with Lagos state government don't comply with the building rules & standards.

This is part of what I've been shouting about but they say I'm mad!

The weak and heedless have taken control of the earth. That time is upon us; when incompetent and unworthy people are celebrated and weild power while worthy people are looked down upon and swept aside.

People have submitted to their desires other than divine will. As a result, they are misguided in their choices concerning various aspects of life including who to put in power and what type of political system to practise.

As sad as it is, it's still good. For God willing, very soon, The Most High will bring about the coming of The Unity. His New Era will soon be upon us. And by then, everything that's wrong with this presently prevailing civilization will be resolved.

This world will be saved! The Unity is coming!!!

You do not have to play politics with this calamity. This is the time to forget entrenched differences and come together to evolve ways and means of preventing further occurrences of this kind of calamity.

Who are they?

People that work in Labca and Lappa?
People like you and I
People who demand and collect bribes
People who are afraid of losing their jobs and means of livelihood instead of Resigning and disobeying an order from a superior?

What is the Guarantee that you will do any different if you were in there shoes?

Who is the Government?
Police, kai, Army, LASBCA, Vio, Road safety?...

How are the people that work in this organisation different from those that works elsewhere?

Op is right. There should be monitoring teams. Are they not the same people that mark "X" on buildings?

If a whistle-blower talks about it, they will still rat you out.

God forbid bit if I have a victim there, I would sue both parties because from the little knowledge I have, I learnt the government always approve each floor before another is approved and the quality of materials used.. If they have given a nod then they should be blamed also..

It's so unfortunate that people lost their lives bcs of greed, corruption and favouritism.
from the stories I hv read so far, I think the building management agency in Lagos did their own part but the high and mighty that has shares in the building couldn't allow the agency to carryout their duties.
Question
Are they going to compensate the families of those that lost their lives?
What measures are they putting in place to avoid future reoccurance?
When the owner of the collapsed building was arrested, who were the mighty that wrote for his immediate release?

What is the coming together for? Is there anything in d article that isn't true? Did the Lagos state govt not know that the owner of this building had contravened building codes?
