The Tomb's plaza at the Arlington National Cemetery opened on Tuesday and will remain open on Wednesday in honor of its centennial commemoration.

Members of the public will be allowed to pay their respects and lay a flower at the Tomb between 9am and 4pm during the two-day ceremony.

Visitors to the sacred memorial site, who were required to register online, will be required to provide a government-issued ID for entry.

Lovely. These are the kinds of actions from government that will make a soldier give his last drop of blood to defend the country.

I always wondered if it was a random monument or had a real body inside. With DNA advancements, that soldier will remain unknown because he (most likely — not a she since women are till today not employed in active combat) died before genetic databases became a thing. His organic remains can get dug up and cloned yet all that'll do is give a modern name to a relic from the past.

Since 1925?

Nigeria needs to learn the importance of the preservation of history. They should stop acting like Hannibal the brute, abandoning important cultural monuments and laying them to waste

There are several unknowns from all the major wars the US have participated in the 20th century, but the inaugural Unknown was chosen from a group of bodies buried in France in WW1.

They will not make efforts to identify the remains because the remains itself is supposed to represent "no section, creed, or race in the war". Essentially the bodies are standing in for all armed forces personnel who died during warfare and could not be identified because of several factors. DNA tracing of hundreds of thousands of soldiers who died before DNA technology is too time and money consuming, so the monument is in honour of them.

The Nigeria Armed Forces are a disgrace both in deeds and in action. Their loyalty is to whoever is president and not the country, which makes it quite difficult for most Nigerians to believe we have an Armed Forces that is worth celebrating.

The monument is significant in the sense that the 'Unknown soldier' isn't actually one but several American soldiers that died during the World War I, World War II, and the Korean War in defense of their country's integrity, honour, and peace.

Our own are either inviting bandits to raid their base, violate and dehumanise the people they are sworn to protect and serve and to sell military weapons to terrorists while their Chiefs are buying luxury properties in Dubai and making billions of Dollars meant for weapons disappear.

That's why I said we need to stop acting like Hannibal, like animals loyal only to our own basic needs. Brutes at the bottom of the evolutionary ladder

The tomb is a symbol of sort. It represents American soldiers who died in the Wars 1&2 and the Korean war. There was a claim at some point that the actual 'unknown soldier' fell during the World War I and his body was transported to Washington from France. It was not exactly known what he did and why he was hallowed that much but DNA testing would later reveal him to be Air Force 1st Lt. Michael Joseph Blassie. The World War I unknown was later joined by the unidentified remains of soldiers from America’s other major 20th century wars and the tomb was put under permanent guard by special military sentinels.

Much later, the remains of Air Force Lieutenant Michael Blassie was returned to his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, and was buried with military honours, including an F-15 jet “missing man” flyover and a lone bugler sounding taps.

While the use 'Unknown Soldier', on the tomb, it actually refers to several others who were drafted into the military and later fell and remained unidentified, even in death.

This is how you plant the seed of true patriotism and love for one's country in the hearts of her citizens. But here our COAS died in the line of duty and was buried at a cemetery few KMs away from the presidential villa but neither the president nor his vice attended, meanwhile see people guarding a monument for their unknown dead soldiers 24/7.
