The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, has said the National Identification Number will enable the Federal Government and security agencies to know the identity of Internet users in the country.

This is as he stated that NIN will be the foundation of the economy and the security of the country.

Pantami said this during the Nigeria International Partnership Forum in Paris, France.

He said, “Some of these initiatives that happen to be the foundation of even our economy is the introduction of the national identification number. Nigeria has joined the global community by making the use of national identification numbers for both citizens and legal residents mandatory.”

“This is going to be the foundation of our economy and also the foundation of our security that whoever happens to go online, his identity will be known by the federal government and also by our security institution.

“As in our 1999 Constitution as amended section 14(2)(b), that the primary responsibility of government is security and safety of its citizens, it is because of this that President Muhammadu Buhari is very passionate about that and he has been pushing that we establish the foundation of our economy and the foundation of our security on the national identification number so that identity of our citizens and legal residents will be known,

“As it is today, the enrollment has been over 67 million and most importantly we are able to capture the most important category of people that come out to do businesses.

The Minister said having NIN is a prerequisite to enjoying government services, adding that it will bring peace of mind to potential investors.

He said, “So it becomes a prerequisite to enjoying government services and I believe this will bring more peace of mind to potential investors to know that the government has been doing something significant in that regard.

“Recently the country has also launched and commissioned a national centre for artificial intelligence and robotics that focuses more on research and coming up with innovative solutions in the area of security and now the centre in collaboration with security institutions is in the process of developing robots and many more that are going to be deployed to make our country safe and sound.”

Lets start from somewhere

This is what his predecessors could not achieve because some were corrupt ( I still remember the scandal of same NIN during Pa Obj' s tenure) while some of his predecessors couldn't muster the courage to stand and defeat the demons who have been blackmailing him all this while for pursuing such a strategic national interest policy .

Internet is never faceless anywhere in the world so why should it now be so in Nigeria if it's not to protect enemies of the state.

Prof. Pantami is a patriot and I salute his courage to defeat all the nay sayers and unpatriotic elements .

So the purpose of NiN is not really to fight banditry but internet users?The power of social media is really hitting hard on this government negatively.No wonder they can't arrest Bandits and Fulani herdsmen killers.

How many Bandits have they been able to track with their useless mandatory NIN policy.

Pantami should start by making identities of ISWAP, Boko Haram, bandits and kindnappers that are operating freely in the North known despite the shutting down networks services

Good idea for a wrong purpose. He didn't talk about how it could help us in determining our true population and other important demographic information.
I won't be surprised if he was thinking of using this information to hound perceived opponents.

Going by your brazen accusation, then the media must be the one fuelling the insecurities.
So you will call what Sahara reporters, Vanguard , Tribune and Punch are doing media practice? Hmmm.

I keep wondering what is special about the current media if you compare the best of times in the past of Nigerian media. Tell , TheNews and Tempo were practically facing death daily to publish not these brown envelope blackmailers of today claiming to be practicing journalism. Seems the era of professional and investigative journalism in Nigeria is gone.
National security is more important than the media. If there's no Nigeria then they can't practice in Nigeria.

it's linked to BVN and your phone number. Now dividends are credited directly without hassles unlike before. Very soon, many services including probate services to claim inheritances of deceased ones, especially those who died interstate ,will be integrated to it. It's only criminals who are afraid of NIN. That's why they are after the head of Pantanmi. Thank God we have a clear headed President, if not , by now, the project would have been dead just like it has been happening since 1999.
Everything including credit rating register to keep loan defaulters away from future loans will be part of it.
Lagos State will be the biggest beneficiary because it will be integrated with its security architecture, citizenship engagement and IGR mobilization.
