Nigeria needs responsible political, religious leaders, says Osinbajo

The Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbanjo, has said Nigeria as a secular nation needs responsible political and religious leaders.

According to him, a religious leader who preaches against another and a political leader who cannot carry everyone along are irreverent.

He spoke on Friday at the launch of a book titled, “Winning leadership” authored by Pat Akem.

Osinbajo said, “So we are in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious society and need responsible political leaders. We need responsible religious leaders, not those who are prepared to destroy the unity of the country so that they can be hailed by their parochial communities. A religious leader who preaches that we should hate other religions is not relevant today. I’m a pastor, but I know that God loves Muslims. I must not discriminate against people of another faith.

“So any religious leader who says that another religion should not exist is not relevant for our circumstances today and the same goes to our political leaders. Any political leader who doesn’t recognise that this is a multi-religious, multi-ethnic society or any ethnic leader who doesn’t recognise that it’s a multi-ethnic society, and that you cannot function with one ethnic group and cannot carry everyone along is not relevant today.”

He also said emphasis should be placed on the orientation of the elite, adding that the success or failure rested with them.

Osinbajo said, “I think a point that should be thrown up is the importance of the orientation of the elite in any society. Leaders are the elite in any society. These of course cover political, religious, ethnic, and corporate leaders. The elite are usually responsible for the failure or success of any society.

“If the elites are selfish and self-seeking, our societies will be harmed. But if they recognise that their role imposes a huge burden of responsibility, then our society would be better.” ,,

For once can we just separate religion with how the masses can be treated fairly and with equity....before we're Christians or Muslims we are firstly humans, let's us that as a yardstick to treat ourselves better sad

Not again undecided
Give this guy the make up, real life joker.

Your government and office have never taken any responsibility for the ills it has overseen for the past 6years, so obviously you're an example of the political and religious leader we don't need.

Osunbande - the mere commissioner :- lacking in intergrity , a confirmed part and parcel of the terroristic regime of poo'hari who drank a satchet of Milo in the beginning of genesis and whose singular act deceived the gullibles and in the process created a lot of zombies in the dying days of his Revelations have just confirmed how religiously and politically irresponsible he is.

And he thinks he's one? Mtcheew!

Politics is the only thing that can make you say or do things you don't believe in, just for the votes. Why is he always preaching about unity of Nigeria? Nigeria is the only country where the leaders preach about unity more than they call for development and innovation. This alone should tell us we shouldnt be one country. Prof. Yemi cannot tell me he doesn't have a problem with the lifestyle of those living in core north.

The more we keep living in denial, the more this country is sinking down. Jesus and Muhammad combined cannot fix Nigeria, the setup is wrong on every level.

The perfect solution to Nigeria is a complete disintegration. This country needs to split up into six or seven pieces. In a country where many people are struggling to eat, some other people that are fortunate to be in public offices with no other known source of income will walk into a mall and spend 500k for just few things. They will even oppress and intimidate you simply because you're not wearing a suit and tie yet. You need to visit and stay in Abuja in order to have a first hand experience on how the people in government and children lavish money on frivolous things.

The resources that should be enjoyed and managed by 200M people is being hoarded by a very few people who are just fortunate to find themselves in public office.

Yet, these leaders keep preaching unity when they and their families wouldn't even mind going to a different market.

Nigeria is dead and gone!
