BREAKING NEWS: GOVERNMENT DECLARES TUESDAY PUBLIC HOLIDAY

Tuesday is Work-free Day in Anambra State

Tuesday, November 16, 2021, has been declared a work-free day in Anambra in honour of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria’s first president who was born on November 16, 1904.

This is the third consecutive year Anambra State is observing the birthday anniversary of the man who led Nigeria to independence on October 1, 1960, and is popularly known as The Great Zik of Africa because of his extraordinary Pan-African vision and commitments.

“It was the Great Zik of Africa who inspired such outstanding Pan-African leaders as Dr Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana who led his country to freedom from colonial rule on March 6, 1957”, Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State declared in a statement signed on his behalf by the state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C. Don Adinuba.

“Zik, who was born in Zungeru in Niger State and grew up in Calabar and Lagos, studied various disciplines in the United States and remains the most urbane, cosmopolitan and intellectually engaging of all Nigerian leaders.

“He remains an unrivalled trailblazer, having established Nigeria’s first indigenous bank, African Continental Bank and Nigeria’s first indigenous university, University of Nigeria at Nsukka, among other monumental and farsighted achievements”.

Governor Obiano reiterated his call on the Federal Government to declare November 16 a national holiday in memory of The Great Zik of Africa.

After all, argued Chief Obiano, the Ghanaians observe the birthday of Dr Nkrumah as a national holiday, just the way Tanzanians observe President Julius Nyerere’s birthday as a national holiday .
“It is a huge national embarrassment”, observed the Anambra leader, “that Nigeria has yet to declare November 16 a national holiday”.

Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment.

Nnamdi Azikiwe -

Nnamdi Benjamin Azikiwe, (16 November 1904 – 11 May 1996), usually referred to as "Zik", was a Nigerian statesman and political leader who served as the first President of Nigeria from 1963 to 1966. Considered a driving force behind the nation's independence, he came to be known as the "father of Nigerian Nationalism". He was the first every President of Nigeria even though his role was largely ceremonial. He was born in Zungeru (Northern Nigeria) and spoke fluent Hausa. He was very educated going to Howard University in the United States where he bagged a BSc in Political Science. By 1954, he became the premier of the Eastern Region which dominated the East at the time. Zik is often credited as the "father of Nigerian Nationalism. However, you never hear Igbo youths of today speak about him.

At one of the most historic debates in parliament, it was Zik who ensured that referendum and secession should be considered treason. Obafemi Awolowo had argued that referendums must be included in the constitution of Nigeria, and each region should be allowed to leave the Federation if they so desired. Awolowo wanted very strong regions and a weak center. Surprisingly, Ahmadu Bello, who was premier of the Northern region agreed with Awolowo as the North never really trusted the Federation and believed a weak center was the best arrangement. It was Nnamdi Azikiwe who argued against both positions and instead recommendation that secession be treated as Treason. He also preferred relatively weak federating units and a very strong center. After the long debate, the British waded in an sided with Azikiwe and that was how the call for referendums or secession became treason.

After the elections of the first republic, none of the three major parties had enough votes to form a majority in parliament. Although the NPC led by Ahmadu Bello had scored the most votes, they did not have a majority. Obafemi Awolowo had invited Nnamdi Azikiwe to form an alliance to be led by Zik. Awolowo could not work with the NPC and had reached out to Zik to form an alliance. Ahmadu Bello of the NPC had also reached out to Zik to form an alliance to be led by the NPC. Zik was often called the beautiful bride because the other two parties wanted him. Nnamdi Azikiwe chose to go with the Northern People's Congress, and formed an alliance with the North rather than the West. He also chose to be a ceremonial figure rather than the prime minister. He had thought that if he formed an alliance with Awolowo, then the North will secede. That alliance will later jail Obafemi Awolowo.

Nnamdi Azikiwe wanted one Nigeria at all cost. Both Awolowo and Ahmadu wanted to have option to leave. Nnamdi Azikwe's insistence of having calls for referendums and secession regarded as treason eventually led to the Nigerian civil war in 1967, as the Nigerian military government considered the declaration of Biafra as Treason. In truth Zik never supported nor believed in the Biafran war and had returned to Nigeria in 1968, long before the war ended. Till today a lot of national monuments are named after him, but why do Igbo youths only speak about Ojukwu and not Zik who was actually a president of Nigeria - even if ceremonial.

This man is the inventor of tribalism in Nigeria as we know it. He destroyed the great pan Nigeria youth movement by subterfuge and manipulation. Where was he in 1966 when other members of his govt. were being slaughtered? He isn't great to me; he is one of the creators of Nigeria as we know it today.

DR NNAMDI AZIKIWE WAS A DISAPOINTMENT & A CORE PROBLEM FOR TODAY'S NIGERIA!

Public Holiday for a man that ruined Ndigbo for his own selfish glory?
Public Holiday for a man with rhetorics and style but played a servant to his masters?
A public Holiday for a man who was a better said to be a Northerner and worked for Northern oligarchy?
Oh, you are celebrating him
because ...........?

this is history they don't wan to teach in school. It is left for the youths of this generation to rewrite their history. Had it been history is taught in school, I bet Nigeria must have ceased to exist. If u spare time to read Nigerian history, u will surely get angry more than Nnamdi Kanu
