#EndSARS: US Secretary Of State, Blinken, Insists On Accountability.... by iwaeda: 10:54pm On Nov 18, 2021
Following the report of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on EndSARS, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has urged the Nigerian government to ensure accountability and address the grievances of the victims and their families.

This is as he said the US government is working closely with Nigeria to help the populations most affected by conflict and violence in the country, particularly in the Northeast, where the US is providing vital humanitarian aid to approximately 2.2 million internally displaced Nigerians.

Blinken said this on Thursday evening during a joint press briefing with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema, shortly after he visited the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said, “We discussed the importance of a comprehensive approach that builds effective security forces, addresses the underlying drivers of extremism, and respects Nigerians’ basic human rights.

“The United States is committed to helping Nigeria do that by continuing to invest in our security partnership, and the institutions that strengthen the rule of law, and that hold accountable those who commit human rights abuses, corruption and other acts that harm the Nigerian people.”

By tackling these issues, Blinken said the US can help to address some of the problems that have been key drivers of insecurity.

Consequently, he welcomed the conclusion of the investigation by the independent inquiry established by the Lagos State Government to look into the events that took place at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos, in October 2020 during the #EndSARS protest, including the killings and other alleged abuses by the security forces.

He said, “We anticipate and look to the state and the federal government’s response to the findings, and expect those to include steps that ensure accountability and address the grievances of the victims and their families.

“We’re also working closely with Nigeria to help the populations most affected by conflict and violence in the country, particularly in the North-East, where the United States is providing vital humanitarian aid to approximately 2.2 million internally displaced Nigerians. The United States continues to build the capacity.”

On COVID-19, he said, “First of all, working together to beat back COVID-19 and to build back better as we address the devastating impact that it’s had on all of us on our communities and on our economies.”

Blinken further noted that the United States has delivered 7.6 million doses of safe effective vaccines to Nigeria, and another batch would be sent by the end of the year. He stated that the donation is with no strings attached as the US is providing significant aid to save lives right now.

He said, “From the more than 150 testing labs that we have to set up nationwide to help tackle the food security crisis that was worsened by the pandemic. We have teamed up for a long time to confront epidemics to improve public health. In that sense, this is not new.”

Blinken added that the US and others worked with Nigeria toward eliminating a wild poliovirus supporting vaccination campaigns at surveillance to detect and isolate cases.

That collaboration, he said, was key to the country being certified free of the virus in August of 2020.

He said, “That’s a huge achievement. Reckon assistance is helping to bring treatment to more than one and a half million people in Nigeria living with HIV/AIDS, and we’re on track for epidemic control by 2023. Our support for primary health care hubs provides vital services to more than 60 million Nigerians.

“These other efforts have helped create a robust infrastructure for Nigeria’s COVID-19 response and broader efforts to strengthen public health security, which are essential to detect and prevent the next pandemic.

“Second, we’re working with Nigeria to build back better from the pandemic by fostering inclusive sustainable economic growth. That’s the goal of the 2 billion.”

On his part, Onyema said that the Buhari regime has been totally transparent and is mindful of human rights issues which is why it set up the panels in the first place.

He said, “Of course we know that Lagos has come up with its Judicial Panel report. I think one thing that needs to be clear is that the government has been totally transparent, having the courage to set up these panels of inquiries and to make it transparent and totally open. We’ll continue to do so.”

Nice. I learnt politicians are already planning to manipulate the report by indicting some of the panel members who pulled themselves together to render a selfless service. I saw this happening but they've failed already.

É so fun jagaban. No amount of blackmail or threats would truncate justice on this matter.

The US should go and solve their own problems first before poking in our affairs.

Because of police brutality in the US, European football teams have been taken the kneel for over a year now, so the US lack the moral ground to advice us on police decorum.

Nigeria is part of the US' problems. They keep giving us aids, grants etc, thinking our baby will crawl and walk someday alas! . Instead, we embezzled the money with little or nothing to show for it .

Besides the fact that you're helping someone does not justify you to be lord over the person.

China has equally given enough in terms of grants & loan but they're not poke noising in our affairs.

When you want to borrow or get grants and aids, USA should not mind her business then?

You people need to fear God and have feelings for humanity!

I completely agree with him.

Everyone including the panel members who authored the falsehoods must be held to account .

Only genuine victims, not fictitious and ghost names, must be compensated and only those who perpetrate acts of criminal human right abuse must be punished.

Nothing will happen.
In Nigeria...... Where mediocre sadistic extremists are elevated to the highest seats of power.
U can only wail and scream.
Nigeria will not change.... I see Nigeria becoming a very violent, deserted wasteland in the coming decades.

Naija is on a downward spiral,it can only get worse.
So..don't put your hopes on the high side.

All the perpetrators will go Scott free.
The victims are demonized, while the criminals will be celebrated.

Is USA a servant to Japan and China that she owes, as at July 2021, $1.3 trillion and $1.1 trillion respectively?

This inferiority complex some Nigerians display online is usually from the place of personal insecurities, severe poverty experience during childhood and low self-esteem.

Sir, if a nation owes debt to another nation, it doesn't mean the debtor nation becomes a slave. In the case of Nigeria, our worth in terms of strategic position alone in Africa is priceless.
Have you considered why Afghanistan that is a near barren country is very strategic to US, Iran, Russia and China? Why on earth will US spend a whooping over $1 trillion in Afghanistan? Or why should US be interested in Cuba and Vietnam ? These countries I listed above are not even as prosperous as Nigeria o.

You are wasting your time, the person you are replying to lacks the intellectual capacity to fathom the point you are making. I expected he would just open this thread and shut up than embarrassing himself about debtors being slaves. See how he dodge your point about us owing China? Because he had little to offer

To this day, the US have no solution to Police brutality that routinely ends in the death of a black man, in fact there are people there who think police killing black people is ok. Accountability for incidents is very low but African wey dey carry white man shit wants to continue carrying shit.

By statistics, there are more white on white cop killer deaths, than black. Just because it’s black on white thing, that’s why there’s always an outrage. First thing to being accountable, is accepting responsibilities for one’s action.

Can you confidently say that is the case with Nigeria? Since we’re comparing which devil is more devilish.

You can't get it, if you have similar problems with people don't go around pontificating to them about how they should solve such problems when you obviously can't solve yours. Only people with low esteem will continue to lift the US and its cynical exploitation of human rights issue to pursue it's political objectives.

He's talking to deaf and stupid people

The officers responsible for the killings have all been promoted and rewarded with plum political posts and juicy career advancements

Sanwoolu (whom the military have exposed as the person who called to transmit the order to kill) is busy trying to discredit a report commissioned by himself. One of the top actors who ordered the massacre actually wants to be the next president of the country.

Nigeria is important to the world and a leader in Africa. If anything goes wrong, it costs USA nothing but the innocent would be affected just as its happening right now, especially in the north. Abi na America say make bandits dey kill people people sokoto and other parts of the north like ram? Was it America who said all their investments and aids on power should ensure stability in supply be stolen by Nigerians with an ordinary accountant in the ministry of power owning over 80 houses when his salary was less than 400k monthly? They can't keep quiet. It's not American who said soldiers should go to lekki and kill unarmed youths as well. If not for USA, the whole world would have since been in flames. The China you mentioned can't do without USA, forget all the diplomatic rows between them. Oga na master anyway. Chinese type of grant is enslaving. You'd know as you grow old. The debt US forgave can't be done by China. We owe USA a lot and we can't even pay them back. That's the fact.
