One thing about Nigeria government they always see we Nigerians as dumb people, why on earth will you be joking with fuel subsidy? I thought they said it was removed before? That’s the reasons for the previous fuel price hike. So what are they saying again?

Another misplaced priority. N5K to 40m out of 200m. Please what can N5k do in this our economy? Less than 30 litres of petrol!

Lol. Can yhu see the intelligence of our government in display?

They even have stylishly admitted that over 40million Nigerians are very very poor (poorest of the poors) cheesy cheesy meaning the others are just very very poor but not just so poor as the ones that will be given the 5k cry

Imagine the same government that claimed they have already lifted millions of Nigerians out of poverty still talking about 40million poor of the poor. Hahaha, are all Nigerians not poor like this? grin cheesy grin

So, on another topic, why are subsides bad

Here is a quote from an interview published in 'The Conversation' earlier this month(an interview with Steven Onyiewu, an economist)

(PS: I highly recommend that we read the article that this was quoted from...the sauce is below/at the end of this comment for an understanding of the subsidy regime. Does a very good job explaining a lot of things)

Why are oil subsidies bad economics?

Every year, the Nigerian government runs huge budget deficits that could have been avoided if money budgeted for oil subsidies was allocated to other critical projects.

Subsidies should be used to spur investment in activities that raise the productive capacities of an economy (such as education, health, entrepreneurship, and infrastructure). They should be targeted at strategic sectors of the economy. They should not be used to finance non-durable consumption items like petrol.

Oil subsidies are inequitable, as they transfer the national wealth to those who own several cars and add little or no value to the national economy
.

In lieu of subsidies, the government should invest massively in public transportation and boost the transport allowances of public-sector workers.

Removing fuel subsidies would also be good for the environment and safety on Nigerian roads. When motorists pay the full economic price for petrol, they will drive less, emit less pollution and reduce the incidence of road accidents
.

There should be a clear communication to Nigerians that the removal of fuel subsidies favours the poor, and eliminates one of the several perks that the Nigerian elites undeservedly enjoy.

Lol! People that couldn't effectively distribute food during covid-19 wants to pay 5k to 40m poor Nigerian.

Actually they are the poor 40m Nigerians since the said billions will be distributed among them and their cronies.

What about the conditional cash transfer? How far... Even in my whole village no one got the money.... So who are the poor Nigerians that got the money.?

But what beats me is how some fools will still defend the failure tomorrow.

Its a shame that Nigeria government is talking about subsidy removal, whereas the united state, Europe , China are subsiding relevant sector of their economy.
Subsidy is not the cause of Nigeria financial challenges, but government approach to economy growth.

If you can't find job, employ yourself.
Here is an opportunity to be employed without paying any money to anybody.
1: Just get a pen and paper ,
2: Go around your community and
3: Collate address ,Products and Phone Number of Businesses in your area selling Vehicles, Properties, Laptops, Phones, Home Appliances.
4: Fill the data into this form https://forms.gle/we8vEPmNb6RTHwqX8
5: Buyers will be refer to them.
6: Once the seller you referred made any sales to the buyers sent to them, you get 1% commission.

How is this a thoughtful process that is meant to work positively

Good question: when you put subsidy on petrol, you are lining the pockets of fuel dealers and importers including the fat rats at NNPC. You are also feeding other countries like Benin, Togo etc with our resources because these products are smuggled across the border into these countries. Petrol is more expensive over there and they rely on smuggled petrol from Nigeria which is cheaper. By directly giving that subsidy money to Nigerians who deserve it, they are able to buy it though at higher price, but the social pay will offset that, thereby plugging the holes of corruption and making the fuel more available to everyone.

#5000 for 40m Nigerians amount to #200B. Can't the government put such money into transportation infrastructure?
A share of #5.5B for each state to purchase busses (petroleum assisted mass transit buses) whose fare will be fair to the masses.
Each states ensures every local government has its own busses peculiar to its terrain.

The idea of distributing cash is awkward and imbecillic. Use the cash for infrastructure
