NLers,

This is a very serious matter. Their presence in the streets is the result of our failure as a society.
People with "mental health issues" would be a good start in the first place. There should be no vagrants all about town if we were serious.
Mental health doctors and nurses, we need your contribution here.

In psychotic diseases, one of the symptoms can be disinhibition: that is loss of control over certain behaviours. Loss of certain social etiquette: a person without mental health problem would not be talking to himself all day and laughing alone all day or going unclothed on the street.
They see such behaviour as normality. They exhibit first rank symptoms such as hallucination, thought control (someone's stealing ideas from his brain, people have put a device in his house and his thoughts are been broadcast on TV, people are after his life, ) passivity symptoms(people are controlling his body, he's getting instructions directly from Gaddaffi or Obama or the Queen -and may kill believing he was ordered to do so by Gaddafi), delusions (he's Jesus or Hitler etc). Although delusion is not necessarily first rank symptom.

Yaba, Aro, Uselu and I think 3 other psych hospitals serve 160m people in Naija, ridiculous. I know UK naija med students who would have liked to specialise in psych but what prospect back home. Pay in Uk is not bad at all. So Naija again is losing it's brightest to the West.

Mental health issues are very common. I was amazed how common it is among Africans in UK. It made it obvious to me just the scale of the problem back in Naija and how many are not been treated.
In my 3-month attachment at a fomous London psych hospital I noticed the high rate of the problem from countries that were in civil war within the past 20 years.
Considering the population of Naijas in Uk, they are well-represented there too. But many are treated early enough and some can even return to work. Trouble is we stigmatise it some much in our culture that many deny it and only present late even in UK. Some even have to be sectioned.
Today being an immigrantsadsocial drift, descrimination) is now considered as one of many risk factors.

You wonder if some terrorists are not in that group believing God has chosen them to kill infidels and all what not.

Hi. I'm a new member; never did I think I'd devote my first post to such a gritty topic.

There are a number of reasons why "mad" people may laugh at anything they see/hear/think:

1.) They are care-free: they have no worries in laugh, hence are often in a good mood.

2.) They scorn upon our ways of doing things: we go to the effort of buying food, cooking, cleaning, providing an education for our children (not that I have any yet!) and, in many cases, looking our very best for social meetings - the mad person needn't worry about such things, as their lives portray some of the most easy-going, stress-free lives that will ever exist on our planet.

3.) Many famous quotes by famous people have said, "There is a time to play; a time to rest (I think it also says so in The Bible)." A lot of people are now mad because of the tremendous amount of stress/anxiety they've had to cope with in their, sadly wasted, lives. Laughing may be a sign of relaxation from the negative emotions they've encountered.

4.) Their five senses sense things that we, as "sane" people, don't: funny voices, funny smells, funny sights, funny sensations in their nervous system and funny tastes. On top of that, they may also have very random, laughable thoughts cropping up in their disturbed minds.

What we should never do is laugh at them or scorn upon them - they are inferior to us, and they ought to look up to us. These sort of people need help: they don't need to be laughed at, although there are many "mad" people who prefer to live on the streets, and I think people should respect that to a higher degree.
Re: Why Do Mad People Laugh? by RedStone1: 9:21pm On Jul 27, 2011
I'd also like to mention that "mad" people are perfectly entitled to laugh, should they feel like doing so. "Sane" people laugh, so why can't mad people laugh?

Lol.

Let’s just say it’s because they’re slightly manic.
Re: Why Do Mad People Laugh? by Probz(m): 4:13am On Oct 19, 2022
Apparently people in the throes of manic-depressive insanity and hebephrenia roam the streets/market by preferential volition.

Are we okay, redstone?
