As reported on Nairaland in 2017, the Federal University Of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) banned the niqab, which is an Islamic dress that covers the entire body of a woman except her eyes. The reason for this was obviously to ensure that people on campus could be identified. They didn't ban the hijab, which covers a woman's face and neck, or the chador, which covers a woman's entire body except her face.

Recently, a former student of FUNAAB came to the university dressed in a the niqab. The security men insisted that she must remove her face-covering veil before she could enter university. Subsequently, the university confirmed that the niqab is banned at FUNAAB.

Now the Muslim Rights Concern, a very important muslim rights organization headed by Professor Ishaq Akintola, is challenging the niqab ban at FUNAAB. According to him, the niqab ban violates the freedom of religion guaranteed by the constitution, which says "Every person shall be entitled to freedom of ... religion ... to manifest and propagate his religion or belief", so it's illegal.

He said, "No institution of learning, from primary to tertiary, whether federal, state, or even private, has the right to prohibit the use of hijab or niqab. It is a contravention of the provisions of Section 38(i) & (ii) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended. To that extent, therefore, all anti-niqab pronouncements, memos, circulars, posters, etc issued by FUNAAB are null, void and of no legal effect whatsoever. Same goes for all such declarations and actions in other academic institutions throughout Yorubaland."

He provided a possible compromise to address the security concerns: "if the authorities are not just keen on profiling Muslims, all they need to do is to ensure that Muslim women wearing niqab or hijab are checked by female security personnel. Their identities can also be verified by female officials who will take them to one side and take a look at their faces and cross-check on their identity cards."

He called for muslim students to take action against the niqab ban, saying, "FUNAAB has crossed the red line. This oppression must stop and Muslim students have to take their destiny in their hands or the humiliation will continue ad infinitum. From now on, any institution in the South West that messes up with Allah-given fundamental human rights of Muslim students will face the wrath of the students." (peacefully)

MURIC is wrong on this one. Hijab is okay for student, which one is niqab again?

The security situation in Nigeria is now very bad and schools must be able to identify who is under a cover so it’s good that FUNAB is banning niqab from their school premises.

The Muslim students should not listen to the troublesome MURIC in protesting any rubbish. MURIC should go on a one man protest himself if he thinks e pain am.

At times I wonder how we got to this level. I wonder if we can ever move forward as a nation with people like this MURIC man.

Why can't we just throw religion to one side and face development?

Each time I see this MURIC man post something, it saddens my heart that some people, who are not even sure of making aljanah bcoz of their hatred for others, are throwing spanners in the wheel of our progress.

Very unfortunate that he's a Yoruba man.

Till today it is Haram in Islam to oppress anyone whether Muslims or other faiths but in christainity it is either you are a Christian or no favour as seen recently on the collapsed building site in Lagos.

It's amazing that Kuffar and hypocrites alike on this space are happy with the development concerning the banning of Niqab or Burka.

What these retards do not understand is that when you place a Ban on a fundamental rights of a Muslim Woman especially, you push us to the wall and leave us with no other choice than to revolt.

Because as Believers, we can take any trash you throw at us until you try to stop us from performing our religious duties.

Keep reeling In your euphoria of oppressing the Muslims, you're trying to wake a sleeping Lion.

Is FUNAAB not a public institution for all and sundry? That means it concerns every Nigerian. If it were Al-Hikmah now, then I wouldn’t even bother arguing with this terrorist enabler I'm ashamed to be associated with as a tribe. Anyone whom wishes to use a full body veil in a tertiary institution should opt for a private one that allows such. This is common sense. Can a security personnel at a school gate identify someone under such dressing without difficulty? Certainly not. So why are you always asking for a mile when given an inch? If you look at that signage well enough, you’d see that there are different modes of dressings disallowed too. Why are these Muslim lots always irrational?

Interesting Dhury, now I can talk to you as a Brother.

First off; Because alot of people are not performing religious duties doesn't nullify it.

Secondly; Women that aren't wearing Niqab are Muslim, but they are defaulting in an aspect of Islam and they need to keep aspiring to do that as soon as Allah makes it easy for them.

Third; Niqab is not a fundamental pillar of Islam, But it's commanded by Allah as follows in The Noble Qur'an - Al-Ahzab 33:5
"O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils)* all over their bodies (i.e. screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

It's understandable if you can't do it at the moment due to some condition.

But you can't outrightly reject it. That's why I add to call you a 5-star Kaafir based on this
Ridiculing a Woman in Niqab

The Noble Qur'an - At-Taubah 9:64-67

The hypocrites fear lest a Sûrah (chapter of the Qur'ân) should be revealed about them, showing them what is in their hearts. Say: "(Go ahead and) mock! But certainly Allâh will bring to light all that you fear."
If you ask them (about this), they declare: "We were only talking idly and joking." Say: "Was it at Allâh (swt), and His Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger that you were mocking?"
Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after you had believed. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you because they were Mujrimûn (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.).
The hypocrites, men and women, are from one another, they enjoin (on the people) Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief and polytheism of all kinds and all that Islâm has forbidden), and forbid (people) from Al-Ma'rûf (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and all that Islâm orders one to do), and they close their hands [from giving (spending in Allâh's Cause) alms, etc.]. They have forgotten Allâh, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the Fâsiqûn (rebellious, disobedient to Allâh).

It will do you alot of good, if you can actively seek knowledge so won't fall to this kinda error again.

May Allah the the turner of hearts guide our heart towards HIS servitude.
