Your ignorance stinks to high heavens!

Community pharmacies are not "chemist shops"! They're primary healthcare providers! I don't blame you, I blame the authorities that still license quacks to trade on drugs in this 21st century. Go to even our neighboring Ghana, there are no such thing as patent medicine dealers! Only licensed pharmacists deal on drugs there! Mind you, life expectancy in Ghana is far better than Nigeria due to their organised healthcare system!

FYI, every drug is a potential poison and only pharmacists can guide you properly on how to use drugs to avoid the poisonous effects. In community pharmacies, pharmacists not only dispense prescribers prescriptions, they also counsel patients on how to use their drugs, they follow up patients who are suffering from chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, kidney failure etc. They help such patients avoid the dangerous effects of their long term medications so they can live long and good quality lives.

Also, in some community pharmacies, compounding of extemporaneous medications take place. Need I remind you that community pharmacies are now vaccination centers for covid19.

Now generally speaking, pharmacy profession in much more broad than medicine and unlike medicine, pharmacists can change from one aspect to another. They can navigate from community pharmacy to industrial pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, academic pharmacy, regulatory affairs pharmacy, administrative pharmacy etc. Only thing is that you have to resign in one before you join the other as your license cannot be used in multiple places at the same time.

Again, some of us chose pharmacy over medicine because it is easier to establish oneself on private practice in pharmacy than in medicine, in terms of financial cost and time required to open a private practice.

Medicine is good but as a matter of fact, pharmacy has much more options aside hospitals. Pharmacists who are interested in research also stand better chances of breaking through in research and gaining international recognition compared to medical doctors. So, next time before you expose your ignorance for the world to see, do your research well.

Congratulations on achieving your dream to become a Pharmacist.

This is what that female doctor in PH who had her chain of community pharmacies shut should have done since she loves to practice Pharmacy but not a licensed Pharmacist.

We need more of focused, disciplined and hardworking youths like him.

Great. But is Pharmacy in Nigeria just about drug dispensing in Nigeria? I.e. Community Medicines.
How about drug research & Production?
I don't know much about Pharmacy but I know that The man Jonas Salk was a Medical doctor but he researched /created vacines & never practiced medicine.

This post is so encouraging. It has spoken to me. I'm glad he had a benefactor and he worked while pursuing his pharmacy degree.

But wait o...
In owing a pharmacy business and owning a private hospital, I wonder which one racks in more money in Nigeria?

Sorry about this quote. It was meant for another poster. I was in a hurry when I quoted you.

If you don't understand something, just keep shut or ask question before opening your mouth to expose your ignorance!

Medical pharmacology is not anywhere close to being equal to pharmacy! You have to have a drug first before you talk about how the drug works in the body! A whole lot of work goes in before drugs are produced from natural, synthetic and semisynthetic sources!

Also, even when you finally synthesize the drugs, a whole lot of works also go into compounding the drugs into what you have as medications and in putting such drugs into different dosage forms that enable them to exact their therapeutic effects.

After compounding the drugs into different dosage forms, a whole lot of works are also required to ensure that patients get these drugs in good forms as to be beneficial to them without causing deleterious effects on the patients.

At every stage of the above processes, pharmacists are the only trained professionals involved. I guess when some of you get hold of a finished pharmaceutical product, it doesn't occur to you that pharmacists were the ones who put in so much efforts in manufacturing such products.

I will ignore this mention because I believe your fight is with someone else not me.

Next time read the comment of those you rush to quote.

I beg to differ here. After graduating from Medicine, the society needed his input. Who may know those that died he may have saved

He could easily have gone for pharmacy as a second degree yet he wasted another 5yrs reading a course he already did a chunk of in medical pharmacology

A lot of doctors go for specialisation in areas they have interest rather than going back to the root of the course

Just imagine how some of you boldly make ignorant statements even with your limited knowledge. Which is nursery and which is college I'm sure you don't even know the work load in pharmacy. If you do, you would know that pharmacy is arguably tougher than medicine. In pharmacy, you're not just studying drugs products, you're also studying diseases and health. A lot of work is involved in making drugs!

No. Just look up what a few Pharmacists in Nigeria are doing. Most of those with community pharmacies have their main jobs where they practice. On international level, there are many inventor pharmacists, from discovery of morphine to inventing first electric lighter(the prize is not to Thomas Edison as wrongly believed) , to coca cola and pepsi, among many other inventions by Pharmacists.
In Nigeria, I see pharmacists all over, from NAFDAC to SON to Pharmaceutical industries to public health to Banking to even politics, etc. The main thing is to study the course that makes you fulfilled.
