Yes! Commonsensically, Ukraine is a sovereign nation and it has the right to do whatever it like. But the world politics does not work like that. Some countries dictate to others. The first world & the second was caused by interference. Countries meddling in matters of other countries, which is absolutely not their business.

For example, Cuba is a sovereign state. It has the right to invite any country into its territory as u said. But have u heard of the Cuban crisis? The USSR deployed it's missile system to Cuba. They wanted use them against the US. The US immediately placed economic sanctions on Cuba and refuse to lift the sanctions till date.

If the US were in Russian shoes, they will do more than this.

The relationship between Russia and China is unique. They need each other, to tackle the West. The Chinese are gaining a lots from Russia. They buy weapon from Russia and the Russians gives them the right to build their own version of these weapons. The rapid military growth the Chinese have experienced, is as a result of technology transfer they enjoy from Russia. When Russia annexed Crimea, the sanction imposed on Russia really affected the Russian economy. But chinese came in to rescue Russia. They pump billions on dollars into Russian economy. The US is interested in NK for two reasons.

1. NK shares border with NATO member (South Korea).
2. NK is a buffer zone between the West and China. NK is in between South Korea and China. If US takes over NK, then China will have a new neighbour (US).
