HOW YOU CAN OVERCOME LUST AS A CHRISTAIN

Ever wondered why you feel the strong pull back to a habit or lifestyle the moment you become born again or you decide to become committed to God? Don’t worry – you aren’t alone in this.
Lust is one major challenge of Christians who want to strengthen their walk with God. It’s a real pain more especially if you’re a new convert in Christ, or you’re trying to walk in the light of God’s word – and then you feel the urge to do certain things which aren’t in line with the word.
“Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience”. Ephesians 2:2
Before you became born again, you were by nature rooted in sin. Your body and soul are pre-programmed according to the fashion of this world – this simply means – your human body and mind was already pre- programmed to sin. Now that you’re born again, your body and soul are still in the same old state. There will always be a pull back to sin – IF YOU DON’T PUT YOUR BODY UNDER CONTROL.


WHAT IS LUST

Lust in this context simply means to have a strong and uncontrollable desire for something.
For instance: the hunger for food isn’t a sin, but uncontrolled desire for food is gluttony, and that’s a sin.
The most common among believers, especially singles – is sexual lust.
Sexual lust has led a lot of believers astray, and till date many are still struggling with it.

There are different kinds of lust, but all are categorized under these 3:

-Lust of flesh
-Lust of the eyes
-The pride of life
(1 john 2:16)

So, you must understand that your body is naturally attracted to sin. So long as you are in the flesh, you can’t overcome lust. That’s because, lust is of the flesh.

Note: flesh in this context is the human nature corrupted by sin.

So then, they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
Romans 8:8

Lust can have negative and lasting effects on a believer, if not properly dealt with.
The lust for sex often leads to: fornication, adultery, masturbation, lesbianism, and homosexuality.
The lust of the eyes, which includes: the uncontrolled desire for material possessions often leads to stealing, cheating, killing, and etc.
The pride of life which includes: the strong desire for fame, power, high positions, and etc

How to overcome lust

You can never overcome lust if you’re in the flesh - If you’re always doing things that satisfies your body and emotional desires, contrary to the word of God – it will be impossible to escape lust.

This I say then, walk in the spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16
The only lasting solution is to embrace the word of God.
And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may be able to prove that which is good, and acceptable, perfect will of God. Romans 12: 2

Study the word Of God daily to renew your mind.
Meditate on God’s word always. Everything sin stems from the mind and so, constant meditation on the word will renew your mind.
But every man is tempted when he’s drawn away by his own lust, and enticed.
And then, when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when finished, bringeth forth death. James 1:14-15
