I was watching a talkshow recently where the renowned Dr Ben Carson was speaking to Whoopi Goldberg and her co hosts about the link between poverty and out of wedlock babies... Call it baby mama, single parenting or whatever these are basically out of wedlock babies. And i was amazed to find numerous studies on this world wide, and it got me scared about the wide spread practice of girls getting pregnant in their parents homes outside wedlock which is very common now in Nigeria especially in cultures like Akwa Ibom, Rivers state and Bayelsa where this practice of out of wedlock pregnancy is seen as normal or encouraged.

Studies show that Among children living in single-mother families, 60 percent of children born out of wedlock are poor in developed countries and if you look at states like rivers state where 70% of young ladies have either had a child outside wedlock or will have a child outside wedlock before she is 24 these states have extreme poverty.

What is a child born out of wedlock called?
Conversely, illegitimacy (or bastardy) has been the status of a child born outside marriage, such a child being known as a bastard, a love child

Infact just using Google to search on the effects of single parenting will yield lots and lots of credible research data and stats that show that majorly out of wedlock babies are more likely to get involved in drugs and crime etc. Recently the chairman of the EFCC noted that a large proportion of the youths arrested for cyber crime aka Yahoo and children from single parent homes, when he was trying to highlight the importance of family influence in curbing the menace of cyber crime in our society.

We have to stop glorifying this shame of out of wedlock parenting , changing the name from bastardry to baby mama or bay daddy doesn't improve the negative effects.
