The Hisbah Board of Kano State in northern Nigeria says it is illegal to compete in the beauty pageant. The commission’s chairman, Sheikh Muhammad Harun Ibn-Sina, who made the announcement in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, said competing in the beauty pageant was a form of teaching women to be modest. He was speaking just days after a young Kano State girl, Shatu Garko, won the 44th beauty pageant. Shatu, 18, defeated 18 other women at a ceremony on Friday night at the Landmark Center in Lagos. She is the first hijab woman to win the competition in history and this is the 44th time of the competition which is called Miss Nigeria in English.
