Heart disease is a leading cause of death, but it's not inevitable. While you can't change some risk factors such as family history, sex or age, there are many ways you can reduce your risk of heart disease.

When you're aware of both what you can be doing and what you should stop doing to preserve the health of your heart, you are taking control over the quality and the length of your life. The following are ways you can reduce your risks of heart failure:

1) Eat A Heart-healthy diet :
A heart-healthy eating plan includes: an abundance of fruits and vegetables, lean meat and fish rich in omega-3 fats such as salmon fish, high-fibre whole grains such as wheat, oatmeal, etc.

2) Cut Back on Salt : High levels of sodium in the diet can cause accumulation of fluid in the body that consequently puts excess stress on the cardiovascular system. Also, limit your intake of sugar, alcohol, fries, red meat, processed foods

3) Maintain A Healthy Weight : Extra pounds can interfere with blood circulation and put excess pressure and stress on the heart. Aim for a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9. And pay particular attention to belly fat, which can increase your risk of heart disease even more than fat on other parts of your body.

4) Don't smoke or use tobacco product : Cigarette smoke reduces the oxygen in your blood, which increases your blood pressure and heart rate because your heart has to work harder to supply enough oxygen to your body and brain. If you don't smoke you're ahead of the game. If you do smoke, quit.

5) Get active : Aim for at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic exercise, such as walking at a brisk pace or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity, such as running

6) Get good quality sleep : A lack of sleep can do more than leave you yawning; it can harm your health. People who don't get enough sleep have a higher risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes and depression.
Most adults need at least 7 hours of sleep each night.

7) Control high BP and keep cholesterol level at normal level : High BP and high cholesterol can damage your heart and blood vessels. You make a good move towards your heart health by keeping both of them at healthy range.
