What is Biostatistics? The name actually gives it away. It's simply a field in medical science that makes use of Statistics in solving medical problems. Most people in the medical field do not like mathematics, so it's understandable that many people in the medical field dread Biostatistics. This is unfortunate as Biostatistics should not be dreaded but loved. This is because Biostatistics is very empirical. We use it in our day to day medical practice without even knowing it. I think the reason why Biostatistics seems difficult is because we allow the non-medical statisticians/ mathematicians to intimidate us with their strange equations. I think its high time we, those in the medical field, take charge of Biostatistics and develop it at the pace with which we understand and can relate with. This thread is for all lovers of Biostatistics, especially those in the medical field. Biostatistics is a very budding field with lots of prospects. It's a very important tool used in Public Health (especially in Epidemiology), but it can also be used in other aspects of medicine. This thread is meant to be educational, but is also intended to be career oriented as well. Also general chats, questions, comments, jokes, etc. are welcomed as long as they are biostatistics-related. 4 Likes 2 Shares |

Ok, I'm gonna start off the conversation by asking the question: If the average age of boys in a class is 15 years and the average age of girls is 13 years. If I randomly select a boy and a girl from that class, will the boy be older than the girl? Yes, No, or Don't Know? 1 Like |

Obinoscopy:The answer is "Don't Know" We can't say for certain who will be older. However we can say the chances that the boy will be older is higher. 1 Like |

Another question: Let's imagine, a class of only 5 girls with ages: 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 years. If we are told to select three girls out of the class. What do you are think are the total number of possible selections that can be done? |

Obinoscopy: That’s true but a good advanced mathematical backing would help in psychiatry (especially when it comes to understanding the different forms of bipolarity). The fundamentals of mixed-mania (purple), mania (red), (severe) depression (blue/indigo), O.C.D. (purple-lite) and schizophrenia (and the corresponding more exact pharmaceutical regimes best-suited to each phenotypic case) would be far-better-understood with a bit of calculus application (even if it means having shrinks study a bit of Kumon maths). Kraepelin really tried but his lack of interest in the most essential mathematical tools needed to understand manic-depressive insanity stopped him reaching the fullest picture (as brilliant as he was overall), especially in regard to mixed episodes (which he really did try to elucidate in empirical terms and definitely managed on his ordained-orthodox-groupings descriptive standpoint). Mathematical application could be applied thereafter in some sort of public-health context to underpin the overarching cultural/behavioural-and-spiritual patterns of the world. There’s so much clear manifestation of the relevance of all that in Igboland alone (perhaps especially). Subconscious study of it is some people’s very life essence, even. 2 Likes |

Obinoscopy:What if there are 100 students in a class, and 20 have Covid. What is the risk of a student to have covid in that class? |

Cmanforall:LOL, it definitely wasn't done via biostatistics. But the OP must have tagged you somehow. |

Probz:True, maths/logic is applied everywhere even in English Language or anyother language for that matter. |

Obinoscopy: Which software do you use for analysis? Maybe we can use that to make the thread even more interesting |

Obinoscopy:Okay How about to start teaching the basics of R here and everyone following this thread will progress accordingly. This is just a thought though. Or should we do this with SAS? |

Obinoscopy:(Those with disease ÷ thise without the disease) x 100 = Odd (Those with disease ÷ all students) × 100= risk |

Obinoscopy:I run from biostatistics cause I am not entirely convinced with myself that I am good with numbers. What has been your experience with using R? |
Re: Thread For Biostatisticians and Biostatistics Enthusiasts by Codepain: 7:14am On Sep 23, 2022 |
Obinoscopy:Yes, the answer is we don't know depending on the datasets. If the age of the boys is 1,1,1,57 and girls 13,13,13,13. P(boy>=13)=1/4 Which is lesser than probability picking any girl |
