The spending power of Premier League clubs has been
highlighted by a new graph showing just how much money
has been spent on transfer fees in Europe over the past 20
years - with Chelsea topping the charts just ahead of
Manchester City .
The table has taken into account the transfer fees spent
since the 2000/2001 season by some of the biggest clubs
in the world.
But it's dominated by English football - with no less than six
Premier League sides featuring prominently in the graph,
which consists of 15 teams.
It's Chelsea who have spent the most so far this century,
according to the information from Transfermarkt.
The Blues were purchased by Russian billionaire Roman
Abramovich back in 2003. Under his stewardship, Chelsea
have become, arguably, London's most successful club;
winning the Premier League on multiple occasions as well
as two European crowns.
That success has come at a heavy price, though. The Blues
have amassed over £2billion since Abramovich took the
reigns in west London - a figure just slightly higher than title
rivals Manchester City, who sit second in the list.
Following Sheikh Mansour's takeover back in 2008, City
were the wealthiest club in the Premier League.
Newcastle 's recent £305m Saudi-backed takeover may
have made the Toon Army the richest club in the land, but
City have still spent a whopping £199.8bn over the past 13
years.
Just like Abramovich's generous backing has worked its
magic at Stamford Bridge, Mansour's riches have helped
transform City into a European heavyweight. The Citizens
have dominated English football over the past few years
with a host of big-name signings led by the brilliance of Pep
Guardiola .
Following City, Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid
are neck and neck in third place having both spent £1.84bn
on transfers since 2000.
Serie A side Juventus are sat in fourth with a spend of
£1.76bn - just ahead of Manchester United , who have
shelled out over £1.74bn on transfer fees since the turn of
the Millenium.
Liverpool are in ninth spot on the list after racking up a bill
in excess of £1.34bn on players over the past 20 years,
while Tottenham sit in joint-12th spot with London rivals
Arsenal and Italian side Roma thanks to a £1.17bn spend
over the past few years.
German giants Bayern Munich round out the list of big-
spenders - although their £923m spend looks a snip
compared to some of the other teams on the list; especially
taking into account the success they've had in the past
couple of decades.
