Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke was hauled off during the Eagles' 3-2 home defeat to West Ham United, yet his evening was made even worse by a Love Machine-wielding supporter

It is fair to say Christian Benteke’s 2022 did not get off to the best start after being substituted in the defeat to West Ham - before the Crystal Palace striker was then subjected to an unwelcome appearance from a Love Machine.

The Belgian forward had already endured a horrible evening when he was substituted for Michael Olise on 68 minutes during the Eagles’ 3-2 home defeat to David Moyes's side.

Benteke endured an extremely frustrating match leading the line for Patrick Vieira’s side, before he was hooked off with his side trailing the Hammers 3-0.

Palace threatened an astounding comeback when Odsonne Edouard and Olise found the net in the closing stages of the match, but they fell just short against David Moyes’ side.

And if the defeat and performance was not painful enough for Benteke, he was embarrassed by the phallic object every professional in football fears the most.

During what will likely be the last photo the Crystal Palace forward has with a supporter for quite some time, footage has emerged of a man sneakily whipping out the intimacy gadget and, unbeknownst to the Liverpool ace, pointing it at him.

The supporter successfully approached and asked Benteke for a photo, while expertly disguising the Love Machine, before whipping it out at the last minute and showing great composure to not burst out laughing mid-photo.

Benteke’s gaze and focus into the supporter’s camera was so razor sharp that neither he nor his accompanying stewards noticed the Love Machine to his right-hand side.

There is every possibility the Belgian is still yet to realise the nature of his horrible post-match embarrassment.

It was a humiliating and painful end to another extremely frustrating result for the striker.

Benteke was substituted early in the second half by Vieira.

Benteke was deployed for his first start in five appearances by Vieira against Moyes’ recovering Hammers.

He has only scored four goals in 19 Premier League matches this season, with his last goal coming in the 3-3 draw against Burnley on the November 20.

The only shred of positivity Benteke can take from the loss against West Ham, is that the Love Machine was not prodded into his ear, like poor Sky Sports News reporter Alan Irwin back in 2014.
