Common Problems of DAF Trucks (Paccar Engine) by 1950Mack: 4:39pm On Jan 03, 2022
DAF trucks is a Dutch brand peculiar to the European continent but also very popular in Nigeria. Former DAF trucks use Cummins engine with inline injector, hence they’re easier to troubleshoot and repair. Newer models use Paccar engine which is an electronically configured diesel engine, its fuel injection system is made up of Electronic Unit Injectors (EUI), and that makes its maintenance quite difficult because the fuel injection system has no tolerance for poor fuel quality which is prevalent in Nigeria.

Many would flinch at the sight of a Paccar engine, well they may have good reasons for that, but Paccar engine is not that bad, if you have proper diagnostic prowess you can handle Paccar. All new model DAF trucks are electronically configured, meaning they would house a bunch of sensors which are very critical to their operation, therefore, in order to troubleshoot for faults, one must employ adequate and unconventional diagnostic tools.

Every problem or challenge faced in diesel engines has a cause and solution, it is the work of the repair technician to discover and solve the problem. Below we shall discuss some common problems with DAF trucks, especially those which uses Paccar engine – some Paccar engine has EUP fuel system, while those on semi-trucks has common rail fuel injection system.

Hard starting or no start

Causes: faulty EUI/EUP, weak automatic fuel pump (in common rail), bad ECU, faulty FPR sensor, adblue water, EGR sensor, problem with fuse or relay, bad return valve, faulty kickstarter, weak battery, air in fuel line, dirty fuel filter.

Rough idling

Causes: faulty EUI/EUP, weak automatic fuel pump (in common rail), bad ECU, faulty FPR sensor, problem with fuse or relay, bad return valve, air in fuel line, dirty fuel filter.

Poor acceleration or low revving

Causes: faulty EUI/EUP, weak automatic fuel pump (in common rail), bad ECU, faulty FPR sensor, problem with fuse or relay, bad return valve, air in fuel line, dirty fuel filter, faulty turbocharger, dirty air cleaner.

Excessive smoke

Causes: faulty EUI/EUP, weak automatic fuel pump (in common rail), bad ECU, faulty FPR sensor, faulty EGR sensor, adblue water, faulty turbocharger, dirty air cleaner, inaccurate valve clearance.

These are the most common faults in DAF trucks, it is very important to mind the quality of diesel you put in your tank because that is where all problems start from, cost of repairs are in several hundred thousand of naira, therefore take necessary precautions that can help you save your money. Also, do not waste time on routine maintenance (like oil change for instance), if operators of DAF trucks in Nigeria can adhere to simple maintenance tips there won’t serious problems with their assets, DAF trucks are powerful and reliable.
