Osinbajo On Mali Crisis: ECOWAS Will Not Accept Coups, Our Resolve Is Strong by murecool(m): 8:24pm On Jan 09, 2022
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo says the Economic Communities of West African States (ECOWAS) will not accept unconstitutional takeover of power.
Osinbajo spoke on Sunday in Ghana where he is representing President Muhammadu Buhari at an extraordinary ECOWAS summit to discuss the political situation in the Republic of Mali.

In August 2020, members of the Malian military seized power from President Ibrahim Keita. After the coup, the country instituted a political transition with a timeline of 18 months, starting from September 15, 2021.

Bah N’Daw, Mali’s former defence minister, was named president of the country’s new transitional government, while Assimi Goita, leader of the military junta, was named vice-president. They were appointed to oversee the transition period.

But in June 2021, there was another coup led by Goita, who accused the interim president and the then Prime Minister Moctar Ouane of trying to sabotage the country’s transition.

Two days after seizing power from N’Daw, Goita declared himself president.

According to Osinbajo, there is a strong resolve by ECOWAS and the international community not to accept coups in the region.

So, I think what is being done is unprecedented; in the years gone by, African Union, then known as Organisation of African Unity, never came down heavily on coup d’etat,” he said.

“But it is evident now; there is very strong resolve that the ECOWAS, and indeed the international community, will not accept unconstitutional takeovers of government in the form of coup d’etat and other such unconstitutional means of taking over governments.

“So, it is very evident that there is a very strong resolve which is why we are here today.”

The vice-president expressed optimism that the efforts being made to resolve the situation in Mali will yield positive results.

What benefit is Nigeria getting from playing big brother role in Africa whenever there's a crisis? We need to review our foreign policy.

US foreign policy serves their national interest first and foremost

What has ECOWAS done during the last series of coups in Africa?

What disciplinary action did they applied? ECOWAS is a toothless bulldog.

"Two days after seizing power from N’Daw, Goita declared himself president."

Where in the world has a military administration ever managed a country successfully?

Nigeria has 40 years of military leadership, and not a single road was built. There was no clean drinking in Nigeria during military rule. Electricity was in terrible state. Unemployment went skyrocketed. Inflation was at all-time high. We saw similar thing in Ghana during their military rule. Same in Liberia, Gambia and much more.

So, the notion that Goita would replace civilian elected government is really stupid. He needs to take down and be replaced by a truly elected civilian government, ASAP.

Let the politicians in west Africa provide good governance to the people of these countries, instead of looting their countries. Most government in west Africa get into their offices through questionable elections they mostly did not win. Is that not civilian coups?

undecided What has ECOWAS done to promote good governance and rule of law?
The Malian govt kicked out of office was an unpopular one that failed in all respect.
Alpha tried to amend the constitution to stay longer than stipulated in office, what did useless ECOWAS do?
If they can’t stand up against bad governance they should shut up when such governments are kicked out. After all in these cases, they ousted governments lost popular support and the people welcomed their replacements

You are ignorant and stupid. The majority of Nigerians development, roads and bridges were built by the military. The military didn't start and end with Abacha and IBB.

Why you think say him send Osinbajo? He knows he has no moral justification to speak on the subject matter, because he too has done it before.
