Barely over a year to the 2023 general elections, the Nigerian political space is getting inundated by a retinue of gladiotors jostling to land the plummest job in the land: the highly coveted Presidency.

However, while it is a constitutional right to aspire for any office in the land, the dire straits we find ourselves in makes it imperative that only the most skilled pair of hands must be allowed on deck to rescue Nigeria from the brinks of multifaceted turbulence.

Presently confronted with a myriad of problems which includes, but not limited to frightening insecurity, heightening executive malfeasance, alarming unemployment, dilapidated infrastructure and a badly crippled economy; no pun will be intended to insist that only our best foot must be put forward.

In comes His Excellency, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Armed with an unblemished and proven track record in public service that dates back to his 20 meritorious years at the Nigerian Customs Service where he rose to the position of Deputy Director before his retirement in 1989.

Subsequently, his voyage into politics yielded fruits when he won the Adamawa state governorship elections in 1998, but owing to his manifest capacity and sagacity, he was poached by Rtd. Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo as running mate for the 1999 elections before he was sworn in.

Under his watch as Vice President and head of economy between 1999-2007, Alh. Atiku Abubakar assembled a team of young, professional Nigerians from all walks of life. Saddled with the responsibility to stabilize the economy after decades of military misrule, it is on record that his achievements are unparalled till today.

Amid a looming economic catastrophe in the proportions of the great depression, with oil prices hovering between $16-$28 from 1999-2023; his well formulated policies ensured the clearing up of national debts and payments of salary arrears from decades back, while also building up the national reserves.

Without being immodest, the far-reaching and focused economic reforms instituted by Alh. Abubakar and his team gave birth to a revolution in the telecoms sector. On a personal level, AA, as he is fondly called is singlehandedly responsible for the provision of at least 30,000 jobs in his home state of Adamawa.

This feat alone makes him the 2nd highest employer of labour, only bested by the state government. His unshaking belief in the development of youths through acquisition of proper education remains in a class of its own.

Talking about class and classrooms; just recently, he obtained a master's degree in International Relations from the Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, United Kingdom. His thirst for knowledge is simply insatiable.

At this dicey moment in our history, it would be foolhardy not to admit that the threads of our diversity have been shredded to smithereens by flagrant nepotism and tribalism as being demonstrated openly by the government of the day.

Beyond the rhetorical conjectures usually deployed by his naysayers, AA, without a doubt stands head and shoulders above his peers and the rest of the pack. Bestowed with an abundance of leadership experience, knack for solving problems and a temperate demeanor; these traits will definitely come in handy as we collectively seek to fix Nigeria.

Chief among the attributes that distinctively isolates AA from the rest are as follows:
1. Astute manager of man and resources.
2. Highly detribalized.
3. Business acumen.
4. Cosmopolitan nature.
5. Unrivalled philantropy.
6. Religious tolerance.
7. Openness to learning etc.

Come 2023, we might be spoilt for choice, but there is indeed only one option. A vote for Atiku and the PDP is a vote to get Nigeria working again. Let's use our thumbs wisely.

Permit me to end this piece with a quote by John. F. Kennedy: "Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other."

He apparent had His Excellency, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in mind when he said this. God bless Nigeria.
