AFCON 2021: Egypt coach, Queiroz apologizes to Nigerians

Egypt head coach, Carlos Queiroz has apologized to Nigeria and Nigerians ahead of his side’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, tie with Guinea-Bissau on Saturday night.

Queiroz issued the apology while lamenting again the inability of the referee, Bakary Gassama to award a penalty to his team when it appears Moses Simon had fouled Zizo inside the box during the Pharaohs’ 1-0 defeat to Nigeria in their opening 2021 AFCON tie earlier this week.

Recall that Nigeria defeated Egypt 1-0, thanks to Kelechi Iheanacho’s first-half goal.

Speaking ahead of his side’s clash with Guinea-Bissau, Queiroz said at his pre-match press conference that his team lost to Nigeria because the referee didn’t do his job.

“I apologize to Nigeria and Nigerians, the fact is the referee doesn’t do their job, VAR inclusive. It’s totally unfair,” Queiroz said.

“The reality is the Egyptian needs to press. We lost because the referee did not do his job. The bad decision of the referee cost us the game. Probably this won’t be the situation in our next game,” he said.

He added, “It’s not the responsibility of Nigerians, they pressed. We will rise. Moving forward, winning the next.”

Nigerians need to learn to appreciate their own, since Augustine Egwavon defeated his team the Egyptian coach has been a shadow of himself.
You need to know how qualified or world class the man is.

Yet Egwavon approach made him and his team impotent.

See the profile of the Egyptian coach

Carlos Manuel Brito Leal de Queiroz, (born 1 March 1953), is a Portuguese football coach who is currently the manager of the Egypt national team. He has served as the manager of his native Portugal's national team on two occasions, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Iran and Colombia, leading South Africa (2002), Portugal (2010) and Iran (2014 and 2018) to the FIFA World Cup. At club level, he has also managed Sporting CP, the New York/New Jersey Metrostars in Major League Soccer and Spanish club Real Madrid. He also had two spells as Alex Ferguson's assistant manager at English club Manchester United.

Queiroz has won several awards as a coach in junior levels, and has been successful at senior and club levels, mainly as Alex Ferguson's assistant manager. In 1998, he authored the Q-Report, which detailed plans to enhance footballer development in the United States.

Queiroz is the longest-serving manager in the history of the Iran national team, serving for almost eight years between 2011 and 2019. He is the only manager in the country's history to lead the national team to two consecutive World Cups.

He failed woefully in Real Madrid,
Real Madrid was leading the table by 8 points before Queiroz was appointed, within 2 months, he has lost so many points and allowed Valencia to win the league in 2004. Real Madrid came 4th. The worst position I’ve seen Madrid on the table (*if my memory hasn’t failed me**)

Coincidentally, Carlos Queiroz assistant in failure at Real Madrid, Jose Peseiro is the newly appointed coach for the Super Eagles

Exactly.

But the saddening part now is, NFF don’t treat the local coaches well but expecting good results from them

Let's not count our chickens before they are hatched.....One good game and we are already going gaga.

What's so fantastic about Carlos than been Assistant to Sir Alex and then coaching Iran at the last World Cup? There is absolutely nothing world class about him.

Eguavoen was Caretaker coach at the AFCON in 2006 where we finished third. He was Technical Director before his new appointment... Immediately after the Nations Cup, let him return there.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.....FOCUS is the Word!!!

Bunkum! I wish the Egyptian coach watched the ongoing match between Nigeria and Sudan. There was a clear goal which the referee overlooked, despite the clear VAR recording that the ball had crossed the goaline and the Sudanese player kicked the ball out of the line. Meanwhile, we were already leading by one goal when this happened. His excuse isn't tenable. I wish we could meet the pharaohs once again in this tournament, they'd still collect just like one moniker had said above. We pressed them big time and im happy the referee didnt deny this fact. He was only defending his job to avoid being sacked . I wished we had beaten them more than one goal, then he'd have shut his mouth perpetually

At this point, we need to be very careful so we don't end up shooting ourselves in the leg.
I agree with Amotolongbo and Fergie001.

There is a lot of politics when it comes to coaching and the Nigerian National Team.
We tend to treat foreign coaches better and accord them more respect compared to our local coaches.
