Nigeria Kicks Against UN Same-$ex Rights Resolutions by rhymz(m): 7:08am On Jun 20, 2011 |
Nigeria has warned that the UN could turn into a "guinea pig" of policies that cannot be implemented by member states, following a resolution that endorsed the rights of man-lover, lady-loving-lady and transgender people. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria voted against a South-Africa sponsored resolution that endorsed the rights of man-lover, lady-loving-lady and transgender people for the first time ever at the UN Human Rights Council. Nigeria's vote was, however, not enough to defeat the resolution which was passed on Friday by the Geneva-based Council with 23 votes in favour, 19 against and three abstentions. The declaration expressed "grave concern" about abuses because of intimate orientation and commissioned a global report on discrimination against man-loving-men. It called for a panel discussion next year with "constructive, informed and transparent dialogue on the issue of discriminatory laws and practices and acts of violence against" man-loving-men, lady-loving-ladies and transgender people. The resolution brought forward by South Africa was backed by the US the EU, Brazil and other Latin American countries. Nigeria, which spoke on behalf of the African group at the Council, was prominent among the nations that voted against including Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. China, Burkina Faso and Zambia abstained while Kyrgyzstan didn't vote, as well as Libya which was suspended from the 47 member states amid violations of human rights by Mohammar Gaddafi's regime. Speaking on behalf of the African group, Nigeria's representative at the Council Ositadinma Anaedu said African countries, "and more than 90 per cent of the African people" did not support the resolution. He said notions on intimate orientation should not be imposed on countries and warned against turning the "UN into a guinea pig" of policies that could not be implemented by member countries. "African Group remains committed to the principle of non-discrimination. African group believes that no human being should be subjected to any discrimination because of any particular behaviour inherent in his or her nature. "African groups believe very strongly that at all times we should focus and conduct our work in a way that will advance collective commitment of human rights and not undermine it. "Mr President, If I may ask how come that all countries that lack the ability to have laws and rules and constitutional enactment on issue of intimate orientation only have the guts in the Human Rights Council. "Does it not show fraudulent practice? Because countries that lack the political will within their nations to subject themselves to the true picture of democracy are the ones that are here imposing in their countries things that they did not accept. "It means going against all norms of what we are preaching here: principles of transparency, principles of democracy; principles of accountability." Anaedu noted that of recent, one of the countries that voted in favour of the resolution had the issue rejected at home in Europe and added that even "the greatest country on earth does not have this as a constitutional provision. "But every time we are turning the UN into a guinea pig in things that we cannot even implement at home," he said. The Nigerian representative cautioned that the Human Rights Council should be careful not to go against its objective of promoting "human rights." Meanwhile in a statement on Friday, the Obama administration which had been pushing for man-lover rights both domestically and internationally strongly backed the declaration. A White House statement said the resolution marked a "significant milestone in the long struggle for equality." "This marks a significant milestone in the long struggle for equality, and the beginning of a universal recognition that (lady-loving-lady, man-lover, bisexual and transgender) persons are endowed with the same inalienable rights - and entitled to the same protections - as all human beings," the White House said. Same-sex intimate activity is illegal in Nigeria and is punishable by death through stoning in the 12 states that have adopted Shari'a law, and by up to 14 years imprisonment throughout Nigeria. |

udezue: Thanks a lot. We Nigerians have a funny way of ascertaining what is wrong and right. Yet our country is held back by gargantuan corruption that is actually extolled and encouraged. Hypocrites. |

Basseti:what exactly is your point? That we should fold our hands akimbo and wait till it gets to a point where according to you it will be worthy of discussion? Do you know or even understand the whole politics behind this homosexual proliferation? Do you think it is a question of rights or just some people trying so hard to convince a majority to see their excessive indulgence as normal? |

Nigeria should concern itself with the infrastructural problems at home. |
Re: Nigeria Kicks Against UN Same-$ex Rights Resolutions by agitator: 8:05am On Jun 22, 2011 |
rhymz: We should forget beating about the bush and concentrate on improving our lives. Nigeria voted against but the resolution has been passed and adopted already. So our crying won't change anything. China, Russia, etc are all members of the UN yet fundamental human rights by the UN of which they are members are abused daily. When we get to that stage the UN can go to hell with any resolution that is against our collective culture and societal norms. |

frankly, I do think we have more serious problems to deal with. Nigeria is in no immediate risk of being over run by homosexuals. neither can the UN force us to formulate laws that allows gay people have sex at the road side where the world can see. so we may as well leave this grandstanding to Russia who are doing better than us and are also against the resolution instead of forming James Bond on trivial issues as this. |
Re: Nigeria Kicks Against UN Same-$ex Rights Resolutions by rhymz(m): 2:34pm On Jun 22, 2011 |
People should understand the context of the protest before rushing to say that is not Nigeria's immediate problem like anybody raised that line of argument. The issue of homosexuality was being discussed and Nigeria lent its voice, there is nothing wrong with that, whether it is not a serious issue or not for Nigeria is subjective but at that point the topic was not the numerous problem of Nigeria but homosexuality and their inordinate quest for a resolution that makes it binding on every country that signed the UN charter to accord them rights that hitherto do not exists in the constitutions of these many countries. I say that is balderdash and nonsensical, period. |

We have bigger issues! Why is the UN trying to push this agenda? Nigeria is not ready for this. . . |
Re: Nigeria Kicks Against UN Same-$ex Rights Resolutions by ChinenyeN(m): 5:07pm On Jun 22, 2011 |
First things first, just as others have duly noted, Nigeria has much bigger issues to deal with. So, if they vote 'no', then they should kindly vote 'no' and waka. They shouldn't spend this much time on a null issue. Second, this UN is overdoing it with this resolution. If this resolution is a must for all UN countries, and if it means this much to Nigeria, then Nigeria should just withdraw, no fuss necessary. |

Always good to see Nigeria in the company of noble, open-minded and forward-thinking countries like Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. Naijanistan, we hail thee |

rhymz: My point is very simple. We have way important issues to deal with than to pretend we are the "upholders of moral virtue". Like someone said, we voted NO , now lets move on and focus on our immediate problems. I dont see how the this issue will 1) Improve electricity in Naija 2) Improve roads in Naija 3)Improve the quality of transparency in Nigeria 4) Improve transparency in govt in Naija 5) Improve our ratings as one of the corrupt nations in the world 6) Stop the desperate exodus of the youths out of Naija, ,,,,,,,,,,,,, make I continue? On a personal note, what a man does to another man in the name of love is none of my business and I am not bothered by it. |
