ENUGU- WHAT would have been a tragic air disaster was averted Wednesday when an Arik aircraft scheduled to fly Enugu to Abuja by 8.50am almost crashed four minutes after take off.

The over 100 passengers on board would have perished if the pilot had not returned shortly take off and made an emergency landing.

Captain of the Boeing 737-800 with registration number F-MJK, whose name could not be ascertained, was quoted to have said that he noticed right engine failure and quickly returned to the Akanu Ibiam Airport.

An eyewitness said that the airport fire service, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), NCAA, the SSS, Police were all at alert when the plane landed.

Aviation experts said that it was the experience of the pilot that saved both the aircraft and the passengers.

Passengers who quickly came out of the aircraft narrated their frightful ordeal and called for improved aviation services.

One of the passengers, a colonel in Nigeria Army, thanked God for saving their lives.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has already grounded the aircraft until it is certified to fly again

Loosing one engine on an airliner is usually no cause for alarm, but requires immediate deviation to the nearest airport for landing. So it seems that the Captain took the proper steps.

However, the cause of the power loss should be investigated. Do we have an equivalent of FAA (USA) in Nigeria?

Last time I checked, losing one engine on a 737-800 aircraft does not automatically imply a disaster in the making. If that were so, almost every time Arik has a bird strike, the nation would be in mourning (which would be alot). As my brother said, it is the cause of the engine failure that should be investigated.

P.S.
It is in this kind of situation that Jonathan can tell us not to panic. Not when people are being killed like fowl in front of our very eyes shocked
