This is without doubt, a very wrong decision, and one that would push us into more debt and make it difficult for us to meet our fiscal needs and make our refineries profitable and working again

We have decided to feed the subsidy monster. And if we are not careful, we will end up being more and more like Venezuela

Wrong decision, but then again, hey, its' APC....

Every year, the Nigerian government runs huge budget deficits that could have been avoided if money budgeted for oil subsidies was allocated to other critical projects.

Subsidies should be used to spur investment in activities that raise the productive capacities of an economy (such as education, health, entrepreneurship, and infrastructure). They should be targeted at strategic sectors of the economy. They should not be used to finance non-durable consumption items like petrol.

Oil subsidies are inequitable, as they transfer the national wealth to those who own several cars and add little or no value to the national economy.

In lieu of subsidies, the government should invest massively in public transportation and boost the transport allowances of public-sector workers.

Removing fuel subsidies would also be good for the environment and safety on Nigerian roads. When motorists pay the full economic price for petrol, they will drive less, emit less pollution and reduce the incidence of road accidents.

There should be a clear communication to Nigerians that the removal of fuel subsidies favours the poor, and eliminates one of the several perks that the Nigerian elites undeservedly enjoy
.

Wayo. They know that Dangote refinery will resume operations in the third quarter as agreed, so why make the wahala? They know that APC is in deep trouble with one year to go, so why risk a resounding defeat in 2023 if they remove subsidy and increase hardship before then?

Realists:

Apc would have shout their one legged foot out of the presidential race, had they removed the subsidy. This a bad news to pdp & good news to Nigerians. We just won our own CAF cup.
How is it a bad news to pdp.... what will be the APC govt talking point? Security, inflation and bad economy?

Since Dangote says his refinery is going live in September abeg which Subsidy is Buhari removing again? In Buharis own words 'who is subsidizing who"?

Dangote wishes to start making profits as soon as possible and recoup his investments (politicians also are stakeholders).... So basically the removal ish is just to favour Dangote

When they removed subsidy on Diesel we were told the price would be controlled by market forces. Ever since then the price keeps skyrocketing by the day, in fact the present price of Diesel is double it's price Jan last year, Kerosene is no longer for a common man, add petrol to it and make life more unbearable to a common man. The way Nigeria economy works defies a lot of economic principles, no thanks to economic saboteurs here and there.

Buhari is a wise man. He saw the handwriting on the wall that the removal of fuel subsidy will precipitate the mother of all protest that will paralyse economic activities.

Having seen what played out in Kazakhstan and how the protest almost led to the dismantling of the political structure in that country the government of the day quickly shelved the proposed plan to completely remove subsidy on fuel.

One thing I have learned from human is the fact that our tolerance level is inelastic.

Part of the landing cost of subsidized imported fuel is logistics cost and duties which Dangote will not be incurring

If you really think the reason for removing petrol subsidy is to put our refineries in good shape, then you may not REALLY be a Nigerian. What effect has the money made from kerosene and diesel subsidy removal made on our refineries? None. Please find out the last production date of our best refinery (Kaduna), close to ten years. And to think NNPC workers are still being paid for a non productive venture still beats my imagination. Straight to the fact, our refineries are all outdated. Government should stop deceiving the populace, maintaining them would be disastrous economically. Sell them to private companies that can maintain them. Like they say, government has no business in business.
