Lol. So the fight between Zulum & NGOs isn't over yet?

Zulum should focus on improving the lives of people over there instead of shutting down NGO-run IDP camps and forcing the refugees to return to their villages where they're at the mercy of BHT, ISWAP, and the so-called Bandits.

Pls let forget about tax invasion shit it's all fake and damn farce. This man has in so many time come hard on any NGO or UN agency or other agencies trying to help his people. This is not his first time moreso I don't know if his silly action are just ignorant or wickedness or catching cruise on insecurity in his state or just a religion lunatism.

Those chasing them don't understand geopolitics nor do they follow history. This is something borne out of ignorance, and a shameless display of it at that.

It's so quite unfortunate that we don't see the businesses of all these commercial institutions. The script has been simple keep your people poor and destroy every chance of them growing and we are into business. Nigeria experienced oil prosperity when the likes of Singapore who were still scraping from left over back then. Years later who still needs humanitarian aid the giant called NIGERIA when Singapore is busy being a super power in virtually all areas. Finally even the so called IDP is the biggest fraud ever. Man was created to survive. Give a man fish, feed him for one day. Teach him how to fish, and feed him for a lifetime

Anyway to cut this long story short, are you planning on coming to Cross River State for greener pastures? Hit me up let me locate good plots of land for you to start life . Calabar is not the only happening place in CRS. They are other commercial hubs like Lagos within the state.
Take advantage of the peaceful climate of the state and build your Wealth in peace.

Don’t workers have the option to be personally responsible for their income tax? Since they are international workers I assume they also pay taxes on their home countries so they would want to personally take care of their taxes rather than have the companies deduct it on their behalf

You are wrong - The company/organization has responsibilities to deduct their staff income tax from source. This is how it is being done in sane climes. Nigeria, as a country, cannot grow with this level of ignorance being portrayed here on NL all the time.

The Organization as a whole don't pay tax as it is a charity organization but their workers are to pay income tax.

Young man! Staff are meant to pay income tax to the country where they reside. If you reside in the UK or US - You pay income tax irrespective of whether you are working in a charity organization or not. Everyone must pay income tax. No one is exempted not even the president.

You guys need to think very well before responding to issues. With the level of ignorance being showcased here on NL by Nigerian youths - It shows that NIGERIA has bigger problem than one can imagine.

You're wrong about that. In developed countries, people have the option to take care of their income taxes themselves rather than have it deducted from source. Some people do this especially when they are citizens of other countries and pay tax also in their home countries. You see why you shouldn't be quick to call people ignorant when clearly you are as well?

Illiterates everywhere , pay the TAX and leave the state to another friendly state and send them the support you can afford to send and let them keep their state.

When common sense is not common nko, UN and other charity organization have suffered a lot in that north east axis, the number of staffs being killed by the senseless terrorists who have sponsorship politically is not a happy one to look into. Borneo state and Nigeria should be indeed grateful to all these organs

The Borno State Government is clueless and confused. They want to collect Tax from people who are risking their lives in a Bokoharam state. Shame.

The un is supposed to withhold the tax of its employees and remit same to the state coffers.
Un is exempted from paying tax but not its paid employees.

Staff are not providing any free humanitarian service. They are being paid just like the banker and the doctor. The agency may be exempted but there is no reason why a paid employee of the agency should be so exempted, particularly where such is an ordinary professional hire as opposed to a diplomatic representative.

It's unbelievable that the HR and Finance/Compliance departments of all the 7 UN organisations are not remitting tax of their staff. Totally unbelievable.

INGOs in Nigeria take extra to make sure that all statutory deductions like tax, NHF, pension as well as welfare benefits like health insurance are properly paid. So now imagine a whole UN with the best compliance, finance and HR departments not doing that. Very very unlikely.

There's just more to it. The state government has been increasingly hostile to NGOs recently for reasons best known to them. The federal government needs to get involved before Borno state government will cause problems for Nigeria in securing humanitarian aid going forward.

Correct
Some of those staff are expatriates and may have remitted the tax in their home countries. Even if they are Nigerians by birth. They might hold citizenship of other countries and will be protected by International law on Double Taxation from paying in both countries. Also they might not have spent the requisite number of months in Nigeria to warrant remitting taxes here.
The organizations should respond. But seizing their properties would amount to a huge joke and akin to self harm

I work with an INGO and all these deductions are made from my gross salary. UN is different Bro, they do not pay tax anywhere in the world this is how they operate. The very dull and useless state government is insisting they must obey local laws

They don't have any property INGOs and UN don't buy properties. They rent almost everything offices, houses, warehouse and sometimes they even use vendors car

I am just wondering whose property the stupid government is talking about

This is the politics of international relations. Should the tax be paid to their home countries or to Nigeria. It is not an unreasonable request from the state but it also depend on any protocols or treaties the FG has signed.

Also the state government needs to decide if the UN calls their bluff would they rather the UN leave than not have the tax?

It depends on so many factors. For instance, Nigeria has double tax treaties with 13 countries including Canada, UK, France, Belgium, Spain etc to prevent double taxing people from these countries working in Nigeria, and vice versa. People from the US are also required to pay tax to their home country, so depending on the situation, these individuals may want to personally sort out their taxes, rather than have the organizations deduct from source. This way they can correctly calculate and pay the required tax by themselves.

You're right. I just found out. UN staff are exempt from income tax in most countries. This adversity stance the Borno govt is taking against INGOs will backfire terribly if they're not careful.
