SECURITY was beefed up on Monday evening, at the Tin Can Island Port, Lagos, after officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), on a routine check of a container, which purportedly came with a vehicle and other personal effects, revealed a big sack, full of the United States dollars.

Eyewitnesses told the Nigerian Tribune that the consignee of the 40-foot container, whose identity was still being kept secret, had attempted to cut the routine examination procedure, allegedly hinting of his preparedness to “settle” than having his cargo unduly delayed.

“I think it was his anxiety that got us thinking. Honestly, we have been taking a cursory look at it and failed to find anything twice,” one of those who did the routine check, pleading anonymity, told the Nigerian Tribune.

He said they went back again to check, this time round with a desire to “scan” every item in sight, saying that was when a nondescript sack, which looked as if it contained files and papers, revealed crisp US dollars.

Confirming the development, Customs deputy national spokesman, Joe Attah, said he would, however, not disclose the identity of the importers.

“A large sack was, indeed, found in a container which purportedly came in with a car and personal effects. The sack, in addition to containing personal effects, has also been found to contain US dollars.

“I can’t tell you who the importer is or where the cargo originated from right now. Investigation would reveal all that and even more than that,” Mr Attah said, adding that “right now, the money is still being counted.”
