I believe every kid wants to be a rock star.

Whether it’s a drummer, the singer, the sound engineer or even perhaps the band’s tour manager, since the advent of MTV and the music video revolution, kids everywhere have been subjected to motivations of being the next Beyonce/Ozzy Osbourne.

However, the odds are heavily in favour of those with money on their side, to buy musical equipment and fund their dreams. This is not fair. Dreams are for everybody.

The Reality Star

Seeking to target older demographics looking for softer pop music, VH1 was created in 1985 as a New York City venture aimed at building on the success of MTV’s music video revolution. The overall focus on VH1 is primarily that of popular music, while the network has moved into the reality television market.

Creating music is free. However the means of producing such creative art is not.

In many cases, music educational programs have been cut in many public school systems due to the fact that there is simply not enough funding for them [in relation to other educational areas].

In other situations, there is a severe lack of musical instruments available to those students that are interested in these programs. This is where the VH1 Save The Music Foundation steps in.

Curators of the Musical Youth

A non-profit organization dedicated to setting up and up-scaling music education in the American public school system, Save The Music Foundation was created in 1997 by VH1 President John Sykes to highlight the importance of music in a child’s all round education.

Aiming to restore music programs around the country, Save The Music operates under the mantra of music being an invigorating force in a young person’s life and ongoing educational direction.

By providing children with equal opportunity to a musical education regardless of how deep their parents’ pockets are, Save The Music provides brand-new instruments and supplies, funding for teachers’ salaries, and the basic administration of school music programs, pumping life into pubic elementary and middle schools.

Working at the district level, a school board is contacted for a commitment to restore music programs within public schools within that district jurisdiction.

A partnership is maintained with the district until a satisfactory program is in place. Thus, through proper coordination, organization and implementation, music education on these base levels are brought back to life.

Hitting the High Notes

So far, Save The Music has provided more than $47 million in new instruments to over 1500 public schools in over 100 cities country wide.
