Find the perfect party dress for less

Planning a night on the town? A special evening with that special someone? Drinks with friends? Or do you just want to feel particularly pretty? Then you're in the market for the perfect party dress. But stocking your wardrobe doesn't have to empty your wallet; if you're interested in looking good without paying a millionaire price, here are some tips to find that perfect fit without leaving your budget broken.
Shop the Sales
High-end department stores will often have semi-annual blowout sales, and you can walk away with designer product for surprisingly low prices. Shop around to find out when the best sales will be in your town, and plan to hit them at a strategic point. Remember that if you door-bust you're more likely to find something on the rack. If you wait until the tail end of the sale, the racks will be picked clean, but additional discounts may apply. You might want to visit a shop several times during one sale to scout the place, assess the situation, and determine if it's worth waiting an item out or not.
A Second Life
Second-hand doesn't have to be second-class. In addition to your traditional second hand stores (like Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc.), there are a host of independent shops which only stock high quality clothing that's simply seen some love before it hit the racks. You can often even find never-been-worn, tags-still-on, designer items if you hit the right places. Go on a thrifting adventure and see if you can't discover something worth finding! Remember that many of these establishments are cash-only businesses, so hit the ATM before you go dress hunting.
Consider Renting
If you've just gotta have a designer label (but simply can't afford the designer price), you might be able to rent what you want for a fraction of the cost. There are several online rental services that will send you your dress of choice for a certain window, but that will not allow you to try the dress on. Brick and mortar dress rental premises are beginning to spring up in most major cities; do a little research and see if this option might work for you. Never be seen wearing the same thing twice, and never have the guilt associated with a closet full of couture that doesn't get worn as much as it deserves to.
