The solution to corruption in Nigeria is in the hands of the citizens who must adopt a moral code that prohibits corrupt acts while rejecting those who are corrupt. The implication of this is that the greatest anti-corruption drive must begin with the electorate who must take a stand on who to vote into office by either abstaining from voting or voting for those who will stamp out corruption in their domains. There are at least two categories of citizens who must also do the needful:

The Disenfranchised Citizens: The five million or so citizens who were disenfranchised as a result of the move to eliminate polling units. They constitute the largest bloc of dissatisfied voters in the country. For them to have their vote count, they must be sure that whoever they support will deliver on the promise made.

The Voting Block: A Nigerian voting bloc is a group of seven million or so individuals whose safety and welfare, security, and political interests are guaranteed by the government. As it is often said, 'The rich and powerful tend to be the most corrupt'. Therefore, the Nigeria voting bloc must be constantly reminded that they are in government because they voted for it. They must also make the point that no government is ever more sacred than theirs, a point that must constantly be repeated, in words and actions, daily. This bloc, though often seen as incompetent and sometimes even despotic by some of their compatriots, is the most patriotic and those who join them in blaming their problems on others are the most unpatriotic in this country.

To ensure that there is peace and safety of life and property, they must remain vigilant and vigilant they must be to deter any enemy agents or renegade elements from attempting any harm to themselves and their children. As they have often heard, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Nigeria voting bloc must be ready to replace the corrupt and unfaithful leadership with people of integrity if they ever wish to enjoy the benefits of their vote.

One of the big problems of Nigeria today is that too many persons believe that if one follows the same pattern of governance as was experienced in the past, then all will be well. This is not true. This is especially so as we are almost halfway into the fourth year of the Buhari administration and no other thing has happened to undermine the integrity or the confidence reposed in him by the majority of Nigerians than his perceived failure to keep his campaign promises to Nigerians.

To bring Nigeria out of its political and economic quagmire, our president needs to walk his talk. The belief that those in government are responsible for everything in the country is a fallacy. The Buhari administration must be told repeatedly that Nigerians own the nation's resources. Any violation of these rights or attempt to breach these rights will be challenged and the culprits, whoever they may be, will be prosecuted. There must be strict adherence to the rules and the laws governing the use of government resources. The need for transparency must be enshrined in the Nigerian constitution. A certain percentage of the country's budget must be earmarked for public and not private use. The management of government resources must be made open to the people. In a nation where public office holders find it convenient to steal from the public purse, the ultimate public trust is at stake and must be protected at all costs. There must be no sacred cows.
