We Nigerian Students Are Not Supporting ASUU This Time. by BuharisBoy: 9:39am On Feb 06, 2022
The academic staff union of universities are sensitizing the public especially our parents on the need to embark on a new strike action to force the federal government to fulfill their demand. Here are my observation why ASUU “do not need to be on strike” this time around. I know many traditional leaders and religious leaders have called on ASUU to avoid the need of strike but here are my own additional contribution.
1. ASUU do not need a strike to force the federal government to fulfill their demand: there are many option the union can embark on to force the federal government to fulfill their demand without disrupting the already fragile academic calendar of most universities in this country, one of which is boycotting any electioneering activities, no doubt most of state and federal elections are conducted by the active participation of ASUU members as collation officers at state and federal centers, ASUU should stop their members from participating the election.
2. The 2023 general election: As mentioned above ASUU members actively participate in the election both presidential, legislative and gubernatorial , why not boycott the next coming election, why not stop their members across the country from anything to do with the election, I am very much sure this will directly affect our politicians and will force them to do the rightful.
3. Prolong academic course duration for students. It is not a news that most courses in nigerian universities are not studied at the exact duration, for example a 4 years course is now 6 -7years. This is all waste of youthful age most students and making them ineligible in the labour market due to over age.
4. Repetition of same thing: ASUU has being on strike multiple time on same issue for almost fifteen years with no any meaningful achievements. The 2009 agreements, how can you repeat same thing without any positive result and still continue to repeat that same thing. ASUU should find alternatives.
5. Burden on parents: Any strike action is a burden on parents and sponsors, I hope our parent will help us tell ASUU that we are not in the support of their strike action as they are trying to convince the public that their action for best interest (benefits).
6. The state of the nation: The state of the insecurity of this country is not the right time to lock down schools indefinitely, our government battling to killing of innocent lives and displacement of people, school is the safe palace for most youth now. ASUU should send student to “warzones” at this time. We all know what happened during the last #ENDSARS protests.
7. Student haven’t recovered from the impact of the last strikes. We haven’t recovered from the effect of the last strike, it is too soon to embark on another strike. We shouldn’t spend more than 3 years at home during the course of studies in the name of strike.
I and majority well-meaning Nigerian students are not in support of this planned strike action by the Academic staff union of the universities and wanted to graduate from universities to face other life challenges ahead of us. And we using social media our best tool to call on ASUU to stop this proposed strike action for our best interest.

THANK YOU
A CONCERNED NIGERIAN STUDENTS.

Why can't they wait till 2months to elections? This administration is obviously clueless. My problem with the ASUU is that they will still provide Professors as returning officers during elections in spite of their incessantly unmet demand.

if ASUU are sincere with their demand, they should wait for the election and boycott it but no, they will participate in the election and come back to say we have bad leaders.

No kind of protest can stop ASUU

Protest so the FG will honour the agreement they had with ASUU more than 1 year ago.
