The tide of insecurity blowing across many parts of the country seems to be gathering unprecedented momentum as no region in the country is spared in recent times.
CHANGE has authoritatively gathered that as government security apparatus has been repositioned to adequately combat insecurity and eliminate all forms of terrorism and banditry, particularly, in the northeast and middlebelt Nigeria, kidnapping of under-aged school children in many parts of Akwa Ibom State has helped swell the insecurity profile of the region already marred by the separationist forces of IPOB and OPC.
Last month, a 7-year old pupil of Ekoi Primary School in Ikot Ekpene, was whisked away by unknown persons whom eye witnesses said dressed like immunization personnel and care-givers. The divisional police authority of the town that was contacted a few minutes after the incident, swung into their traditional style of responding to distress calls, securing adequate logistics first, but ended up arresting a teacher of the school on the premise that he should provide information on the development.
On Monday, January 7, three school children were reportedly kidnapped by a motorcyclist in Abiakpo in Ikot Ekpene, when their mother entrusted them in the hand of a cyclist and rushed to the house to pick something in the house. As the mother returned, her children were all gone leaving behind the tyre-print of the motorbike that carried them.
The sweeping tide of the menace has already sent signals to local authorities as to whether to close down primary schools in the place since safety of school children is no longer guaranteed.
